Weight gain posts

Ok so occasionally I'll see these post and check them out just to see how I compare and OMG you'd think I was a walrus. Im 14 weeks and have gained 6lbs. My last pregnancy by this time I had gained 11lbs. I thought I was doing good I read all the post and it seems like everyone that replies has lost weight or only gained like 2lbs by their 20th week. This is super frustrating to see when I'm trying so hard to eat well, watch my salt intake and not over indulge and I've still gained more than all the posts I see. Ok am I just a complete freak or is anyone else too embarrassed to actual admit they are gaining weight too?

Re: Weight gain posts

  • I lost a lot of weight in the first trimester because I had awful morning sickness. I have gained about 3 pounds back since I stopped losing weight, so I've still technically lost weight since I got my BFP.

To be completely honest, I would rather have gained 20 pounds by now than ever be that sick again in my life. It was awful and terrible and I don't even have words for how sick and miserable I was for 6 weeks or so. Count your blessings. I'd rather gain weight than be sick.

  • I am gaining weight!!

I always click those posts hoping to see "man, I'm so surprised I gained 6 pounds in a few weeks" but instead it always seems like, "I gained 1 pound!" or "I'm wondering when weight gain will start?" haha

You are not alone! I think I'm up about 5 at 14 weeks tomorrow. And I feel ok about it :)

  • Dont feel bad. With DS i had gained like 16 pounds by 13 weeks. I gained a total of about 80 pounds overall and yes i felt like a walrus! I have also heard it is common to gain more in the first pregnancy than in subsequent ones. I am currently 17 weeks and up 4 pounds but i am also afflicted with morning sickness and have GD so i am on a strick diet. My doctor actually told me this week that he thought i should be at 7 to 10 pounds by now.. i think as long as you are eating properly and not overdoing it, let your body decide how much weight you need to gain.
  • Just got back from my 2nd appt...i'm 14 weeks tomorrow and have gained 5 lbs. My Dr. said that's a good thing...although i think i gained at least 10 before my 1st appt at 10 weeks!

I was amazed and discouraged reading all of these weight loss posts too...glad i'm not alone!

  • I have gained around 5 pounds and I am at 15 weeks. I know I am eating too much and need to exercise more. Good luck!

  • It's important to remember that not only does everyone gain/lose weight differently, but at different rates and times.  I had gained 6-8 lbs last time by this time and only 24 lbs total.  I know it's hard not to compare, but remember you may gain more, but lose it much quicker too.  Just be healthy :)

  • I'm sure I'd be gaining a lot of weight too, but I'm still throwing up at least once a day. Once my morning sickness goes away, crossing my fingers that it does, I bet i'll pack on the pounds pretty quickly.

  • Haha, I thought something similar when reading those posts.  Because I have been lucky enough not to physically sick, I have steadily gained weight.  I've gained about 7 pounds so far according to my home scale.  My doctor expects me to gain a pound a week, so hopefully I will only be up 4.5 pounds at my next appointment.  At my last appt, the doc did say that my weight gain was on track so I hope that continues!

I'll add that I wasn't skinny when I got pregnant, just sort of average (wearing a size 8 or 10).

  • I was a size 10 too and I'm 5'7 so it suits my frame pretty well. Its nice to hear that there are other people out there thinking this. I know everyone is different. I had morning sickness but was on zofran so I wasn't throwing up and no weightloss (don't get me wrong I'm glad I could eat for babys and my sake).

  • I'm just over 16 weeks and gained about 4 pounds last time I checked. I'm sure that will continue to go up more rapidly now that I just feel hungry and crave food in general most of the time....

  • I'm right with you! I think I have gain 9 or 10 lbs so far. I'm in my 17th week. This makes me feel better that I'm not the only one on this board gaining weight!

  • The weight gain posts will naturally draw the women to post who haven't gained much or have lost weight. Really we should do a clicky post - those get a better representation of how people are doing weight-wise.

And as others have said - every woman gains differently during pregnancy. Just because some women haven't gained yet doesn't mean they won't. With DD, I gained all of my 25lbs between 20-34 weeks (when I delivered). So in the end, I was right in the normal/upper range, but until 20 weeks I hadn't gained a single pound. It can change quickly.

I agree with this. Also, I've gained 12 pounds and I'm totally fine with that. I gained over 40 total last time and I know I'll do the same. Everyone's body is so different yet it's so hard not to compare ourselves.

  • I completely understand!  I've gained quite a bit...around 10.  I keep telling myself it's also because I quit smoking...

  • If you have a ton of m/s in the 1st tri, then you tend to lose weight, but if not, you will be gaining weight. My last preg, at 20 wks I only gained 8 lbs, but then in the next 6 weeks I gained 10 lbs.

This time around, no m/s so I started gaining a little weight in the 1st tri, and am dreading my OB yelling at me tomorrow for gaining too much weight because I'm sure I gained a lot this month.

  • I had gained 10 pounds by 12 weeks, but then Ihave only gained 1/2 until now. I aimed all the weight when I couldn't even eat, and haven't gained much since I got an appetite....what is up with that?

  • I am 17 weeks and have gained about 15 pounds. Eek! Yes it is a little discouraging and scary to read some many posts about losing weight but I remind myself that I have been very lucky not to be sick. I am not shoving Big Macs down two at a time, so I will just gain whatever I gain and worry about dropping the weight after the baby is born.

  • I'm up 8lbs which I have mixed feelings about. It's not a lot but i worked really hard to lose weight before getting pregnant again and it's hard to see the scale go back up. I'm starting 10lbs down from my pre-pregnancy with my first. Hopefully I don't end up with GD this time and gaining a lot or a little will be worth it to me!!
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Pregnancy Ticker
  • i think the same when I read that. At 16 weeks I was up 8.5 lbs...oh I'll just round up to 9. I was a size 6-8 before at 5'8". My dh and OB rolled their eyes when the OB said "you're thin"(regarding something) and I came back with "oh, but I'm getting thicker." I feel like a moose already and when I read ppl only gaining 2 lbs it reinforces this for me.

  • We are SUPPOSED to gain weight. I think average expected is 25-35 lbs, more if you were underweight and less if you were overweight to begin with. And it's not like it's always a steady gain, as people have shared already.

I understand that weight gain can be difficult to deal with for people who have negative relationships with their scales or who were working hard to lose before pregnancy. However, it makes me sick and sad that people would be too disturbed by weight gain. We are growing a baby and our bodies need to change to accommodate that. It's ok!!!! :)

  • For me it's more about the health risks for me and the baby as I watch the scale climb so quickly. I have no issue gaining weight especially knowing I can lose it if I try. I think like PP said people who gain a lot don't share as much as those who only gain a little and it freaks out those who have gain quite a bit.

  • I'm up 12, but that includes my annual trip to the USA where I normally gain at least 10. I swear, just the air is fattening there. It has a lot to do with the fact that I use it as my yearly "well, you don't get good Mexican food/lobster/etc, might as well.." and being on vacation. So, 12 overall isn't bad, but man, I feel like a hippo. I can't even cross my legs properly any more.

  • I was up 5.5 pounds at 15 weeks. Sounds like you are right on track! Honestly, I would rather be gaining weight than be like my SIL who has to force herself to eat so she can gain weight (she was down 4 pounds at 20 weeks).
  • I think you're just seeing skewed results.  A lot of women who have gained more won't post.

That said, I have stayed the same weight (lost about 2lbs in the very beginning) but I chalk that up to chasing around my crawling baby and breastfeeding the first few months.  I'm expecting to catch up weight gain wise starting about now.

Don't feel discouraged.  It is perfectly normal and expected to gain weight--it's just that everyone's pregnancy is different.  As hard as it is try to stay away fromt he scale and from comparing your weight gain to other women.  ;)

I'm the same size as you (pre-pregnancy I mean) and I honestly think it's the height! I've gained 5 pounds but also have grown what I think is a pretty significant bump and people are like, "Oh you're still so thin!" and YES I feel like a moose too lol. I think tall people maybe just distribute it well, but because it's our body we know we're getting bigger?

    Sorry for rambling!

  • I'm up 7 lbs at 16 weeks and gaining FAST. Don't stress. I think people are more likely to respond if they've gained less, KWIM?

Andplusalso, it all evens out in the end, I promise.

Many fast gainers at the beginning (in my experience) tend to slow down at the end, while the slow gainers at the beginning (me last time) pack it on like gangbusters at the end.

Sometimes I swear your body just knows where it's going to end up and picks a different route to get there but still gets there.

Not sure if that made sense. I have a cold and DD isn't sleeping well so I'm a mess.

I love this. Can I use this as my excuse? I mean, I live in the SOUTH, too.

"I can't help gaining weight. The air is really high calorie here!" Ha!

For me, I was working with DD and had to pack my food every day so when I had the munchies I was out of luck. Now I'm a SAHM and even though the budget is tight I have every yummy restaurant available and I'm trying to feed a skinny toddler with high protein high fat foods. It's hard to be super healthy while cooking cheesy egg omelets and mac n cheese!

Oh, and pinterest is the devil. Any recipe that looks good seems to get made that day. Ack!

This is encouraging.  I have gained 13 so far, but 3 have been over the last week. I haven't been doing anything differently so it's frustrating to see such a huge change all of a sudden :(. Moo.

This. With both of my pregnancies I seemed to have packed on the pounds early. With DS, I was up nearly 10 lbs by 20 weeks, but I only ended up gaining 30 pounds total. As long as you're eating right and listening to your body you can trust that it's doing what it needs to do.

  • I've gained 10 at 15 weeks...yeah, I'm in trouble but carbs are what I want and if I don't eat I get nauseous.  So whatever, I'll try my best but I'm surely breaking the 25lb mark that is recommended.

  • Those +1lb'ers will catch up soon enough. Pre-pregnancy I was 5'2 (still am lol) and a size 4. I was up 10 lbs at my doctor's appointment on Monday, but I am back down to +7 today. After this week, I have decided that yes, I will still check the scale, but if I am eating right and exercising, I will give a big middle finger to the scale if decides to be *wrong.* lol

  • I had gained 5lbs at my 14 week appointment.  I think that you're doing great!  I always find it odd as well how everyone on the posts seems to say that they are losing weight.  I know some people will, but I think that gaining a few pounds is more normal.

  • I am glad you posted this. I have been reading these posts, hearing about how much weight my friends have gained when pregnant, etc..and just feel like I have gained too much. I am up 8.5 lbs and I am 14w2d. I was pretty thin/average before, size 4 and I am 5'6" and usually counted calories and exercised intensely before getting pregnant. Now that I dont exercise nearly as hard or count calories, even though I am still eating relatively healthy, the weight just came on so quickly. I know its normal, but its hard reading other posts and thinking wow am I overdoing it. So you are not alone :)

I quit smoking the day I found out I was pregnant last time. I really think that contributed to my weight gain, seriously. But good for you! I know it isn't easy.

  • I'm not afraid of the weight gain per say. I gained a lot of weight I mean 80+ lbs the last pregnancy and lost all but 5lbs. I know I can do it again. I just wanted to know there are other women out there who gain more than 2 lbs in 20 weeks or lose weight. Thank you so much for all your posts. Its great to see women who are feeling the same way I am. :)
