High-Risk Pregnancy

Removal of ovary @ 17 weeks with twins

I posted a few weeks back about my ovarian cysts. A long story short, my right ovary is not shrinking, could be growing, and is 20cm. Everyone I'm working with is telling me to have it removed. I am scheduled to have it removed on Tuesday next week. Everyone keeps telling me that the risks are very low, less than 20%, that my specific surgeon has performed 3-5 of these surgeries on pregnant women a year for a few decades and never had anyone miscarry, etc etc etc. But I am still terrified. Has anyone here had an ovary (or both) removed during the second trimester? Positive reassurance anecdotes from anyone? I've never been through surgery, I have moderate to severe anxiety (GAD), I'm going to be paying $3K out of pocket regardless of the outcome of the surgery, and I'm missing a lot of work because of the downtime involved. Any reassurance from anyone who's been through this would be very much appreciated.

  • I've not experienced this myself, but I've done oophorectomies on several patients. My n is small, sure, but I never lost a pregnancy. And I know that's not due to my superior skills as a surgeon! It really is a very rare occurrence to miscarry due to surgery. I think 20 percent is an overcall on the risk. Good luck on your surgery. Let us know how it goes.

  • Thank you very much :) that is helpful. I can't imagine anything more painful than losing these babies after a surgery, already knowing that another pregnancy puts my remaining ovary at significant risk and already having a huge hospital bill to pay.

  • I just want to say that I hope your surgery goes well, and that you recover quickly. I remember your last post, and I think it's great that you have elected to do the safest thing, given the information you have at this time. Do let us know how it goes.
