Pedicures not safe?

I posted on Facebook about how much I need a pedicure, and some girl I never talk to and don?t know why I?m friends, with posted that pedicure are not safe after 36 weeks. WHAT!?! Why on earth wouldn?t they be and where did you get your information?  For some reason this ticked me off a lot that she would post that.  I deleted it and will still be getting a pedicure. Gurrrr peopleHmm

Re: Pedicures not safe?

  • I have never heard that...I have actually heard of OB's telling people to get pedicures to try to help them go into labor...
ETA: maybe that's why she says it? That you "could" go into labor from the foot massage.

  • I asked my doctor about this and she said just to tell the nail person you're pregnant when you make the appointment.  When I actually went the technician said there are just some pressure points you want to avoid because they can trigger contractions....I think if your nail person is knowledgeable it's NBD.

  • Because theoretically there are pressure points in your feet that could make you go into labor, I guess. But that's not something I'd be worried about.

  • Oh, for heaven's sake. Go get your pedicure and enjoy it. Sheesh...
  • What a stupid thing to say.  I'm going to get a full manicure/pedicure with my Mom next week.  I'm banking on the spa pedicure helping out my minor foot swelling.  Plus I haven't been able to paint my toenails since May so they look like crap.

  • Sign me up! I want one. I like the idea of having pretty toes during labor. I don't know why.

  • It's just because of pressure points that can cause contractions. I honestly doubt it would jump start labor though, so just go and enjoy it.

ETA: I see you're 39 weeks. I'd definitely go get it then... if you were worried about pre-term labor then mayyyyybe be worried. But that's certainly not the case.

  • So funny because I just asked my massage therapist this! She said it has to be bone on bone massaging, which I dont really understand. She said it is NOT comfortable, so getting a pedicure isnt going to send you into labor. I asked her this as she was massaging my feet. :)

  • I just got a mani pedi yesterday, and sorry to say no contractions due to the pedi. Wink Not even a BH

Not that I was going in hopes of being put into labor, but I'm due on Saturday and wasn't worried about it. Enjoy your time at the salon and ignore people with crazy comments.

  • If pedicures made everyone go into labor, then every overdue woman would be lining up to get one. That said, she may have meant that pedicures are not safe until you are full term when the pressure points might help bring on labor... I stayed away from them until I was safely in my 3rd tri.
I am having trouble updating tickers--But I am due on April 2015. I have 2 older step children: 9 and 14 yrs and I also recently had 2 younger children: 2 years and 1 year... so this means I will be having 3 under 3--and trying to fit our family of 7 into our minivan--eek!

This. I actually work at a pregnancy spa doing manis and pedis, and they're perfectly safe. And yes, we'd be raking it in if we could induce labor! So while there are those pressure points that can cause contractions, they MOST likely will not cause you to go into labor...

This exactly. Plus it's not like you're far off from your due date... I just had a pedicure on Sunday and I have NO worries in getting one more before baby comes.

Kind of along these lines...someone mentioned the pedicure thing to me when I was in first tri and I thought it sounded kind of odd, so I asked my OB.  She said that people are thinking of pressure points on your feet that if hit correctly can trigger contractions, but that your massage person would have to be specifically trained for it to have any decent chance of getting it just right, and it wouldn't be a pleasant experience.  So the pedicure techs are *very very* unlikely to cause any issues.

There are! Look it up! There might be one near you, and you don't even know it! We extend our services to everyone, but we specialize in pregnant women, before, during and after pregnancy. Of course, all of our products are pregnancy safe, as are the services: facials, massage, mani/pedi, waxing, acupuncture, chiropractic and 3d ultrasound. We even do preconception massage and acupuncture. It's pretty awesome...

That's the issue...is the massage of your feet that could induce labor.  ;-)
