If I don't get HELLP again, we will be donating the cord blood. Make sure to do your research - my BFF is an oncology RN in a hospital that does a lot of experimental leukemia treatments for patients who don't have success with regular treatment. She said that stem cell treatments from cord blood is a pretty standard treatment anymore, so if you donate then it will almost definitely be used to help someone. However, if I understood her correctly, your child's cord blood could not be used for him/her. The only thing that would make it useful to you would be if your child's sibling were to get leukemia, then there would be a higher chance of it being a match.
Her recommendation was to donate rather than bank, and since I decided to donate I haven't done too much research into banking. Anyway, before you spend the money, definitely look into whether or not it actually makes sense for you.
BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP
BFP2: 3/18/12, blighted ovum, natural m/c @ 7w4d BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence
We donated because it was free and thought the cost to bank was just too much and you may not even need it. Some people bank for peace of mind and have the funds. I am all for donating - it could save someone's life. Throwing it away is such a waste and no chance of helping anyone. I need to find this out from my midwife since I'm hoping for a birth center birth. Not sure if I can donate there.
No, we're going to do delayed cord clamping instead.
This. We delayed cord clamping with baby #1 and will d so with baby #2. From what I understand, baby needs the blood that they get from the cord . . . and I had too many questions/concerns about the storage of the blood.
We do not plan to bank the cord blood, but we are planning on donating it. Sorry that I can't help with any information. I just wanted to suggest that you consider donating if you end up choosing not to bank it. Hopefully someone will have some more info for you!

Thanks for the link! I hadn't heard of this before so I will definitely check it out. To other posts, if we don't bank it we will definitely donate it, I would hate for it to go to waste. Can you still donate if you do delayed cord clamping? I can't watch the video now while I am at work, but I will later!
I did using Viacord with my ds and I plan on doing the same with this little one. It's a very personal decision and it's true that we may never need it, but with medical advances you just never know how it can be used in the future. Once my kids are 18 they take ownership of their own cord blood and can use it as they need or choose.
We are deciding between donating and delayed cord clamping. I've only just started my research, so I'm not much help, but we have decided that we do not want the expense that private banking entails. With the donation program we would use through our hospital, we would still have access to cord blood, just not that of our baby. That all said, we have kept private banking an option if our baby has a rare blood type, like O- since it would be harder to find a match later.

No, you can't do both, The baby will get the blood so there wouldn't be anything to donate.
I would highly recommend all moms watch the video, it does so much to explain the cord blood and how the baby needs it. We also felt it was the way that nature intended birth to be. It is a decision that each mom must make, and no answer is wrong.
This is also a really neat photo series about the cord in the minutes following birth.

We did with DS and will be doing so with this one. We used CBR they had a lot of great payment plans. Also if you know anyone who has banked they can give you a code that gives yu so much off. With CBR I think its $100-$200 off.

This is something I've been looking into banking it's just that the cost is really high, even my
mom who is difficult to shock as far as numbers and has a medical background thinks it's pretty intense. I appreciate the YouTube link as well as the blog with photos, I'm leaning toward the natural labor/delivery route as much as possible and delayed cord cutting seems to fit well with that. I'm reminded of the calm nature of the natural births in The Business of Being Born and it occurs to me that this was part of that. Great thread!
I was really gung-ho about banking cord blood initially. Since then, I feel like my OB and MFM have shoved it down my throat to the point that I'm not entirely sure that they don't profit off my business as well. I entered to win free cord blood banking and they call me every other day. I can't stand it! I feel like I am being pestered by used car salesmen! Also, I feel like CBR and Viacord aren't very up front about pricing.
Perhaps we'll donate (not sure why we wouldn't!), but I am going to research a bit more about delayed clamping. I've never actually heard of that before now.
We, too, will be donating our baby's cord blood (although I will be doing more research on delayed cord clamping after seeing all your posts). We researched the cord blood banking and came to the conclusion that the possible benefit was not worth the cost. Neither of us have any familial history of any disorders that could potentially be helped by cord blood, and we would rather give to a child who has a definite need. Should our child need a cord blood transfusion, we will be in the same risk category as everyone else and hope that more people decide to donate theirs as well. It is a personal decision and you just have to figure out what works best for your family. My only suggestion is research sources that have no affiliation with a particular cord blood bank in order to get as much unbiased information regarding the risks and benefits as you can. The cord blood banks will do their best to scare the crap out of you.

Thank you for adding this, I will take a look at the photos when I get home from work too! I am glad I brought this up today, lots of helpful info!
