Baby Names

Is the name Noah really that popular??

I see it on tons of the top ten lists, but I havent heard of anyone I know naming their baby Noah. My husband and I love love love the name, but I dont want him to be in a class with a million other Noahs (if its a boy- we dont know yet!!). My daughter's name is Ella, so I already know she will be in a class with other Ella's- I don't know if I want to go with one of those super super popular names again?! (Though I dont regret using the name Ella, I absolutely adore it despite its popularity).

  • I feel like it's pretty popular in my area (South/Mid-Atlantic) but Biblical names in general are all the rage right now.

  • Ugh! Not what I wanted to hear, but I guess to be expected with the name on tons of popular baby name lists. Now the dilemna of just deciding to stick with it because we love it or find something not as popular.... (if its a boy!)

I don't know any Noahs.nbsp; If you love it, use it anyway.nbsp; Your daughter has a popular name although I also don't know any Ellas and you said you don't regret it so I suspect youd' feel the same if you use another popular name.

    Exactly

  • I absolutely LOVE the name Noah. I wanted to name my son that, but my DH kept saying "No uh" if I brought it up. I think if there is a name we both loved I wouldn't let popularity deter me from using it. If we only kind of liked it I would probably throw it out, though. And I haven't met any Noahs, none of my friends have used the name either.

  • It is popular but I have actually never met a Noah IRL.  SIL teaches preschool in our conservative Christian town (well she did for several years before moving this summer) and she has never taught a Noah.  A couple months ago I mentioned loving Elijah and Noah but they are so popular and she said she has never taught either.

If you love it, use it.

  • To the data:

In 2011, Noah was the #5 name in the country. Compare that to #7 in 2010, # 9 in 2009, #23 in 2005, and #27 in 2000 ? it has jumped into the top 10 and is still rising.

Noah is the #1 name in Hawaii.

It is the #3 name in Colorado, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio; it is #4 in Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Oklahoma, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Noah is least popular in Alaska, where it is #22, New Jersey, where it is #21, and New York, where it is #19.

In short, Noah is similar in popularity to Emma. In some states, they share the same rank (both #3 in Colorado). I would expect that Emma and Noah should expect similar levels of interaction with peers sharing their names.

  • Awesome, thank you for all the input!! It is the first boy name that we both jumped on and said- ohhhhh I love it!

It was the same way with Ella. Upon bringing up the name, we both immediately agreed with loved it. I have a feeling we would probably stick with it if the baby turns out to be a boy.... and thanks for the encouragement to use it despite being popular.

So we would have an Ella Ivy and a Noah Max. If it's a boy. If we have another girl....... well, then, I'm lost..... we have yet to pick another girl name :)

  • I only know one.
  • I know three little ones named Noah.  Love the name!  It was on our list for our first in 2006, but it turned out to be a girl.  :)

  • I'm disapointed in the BNB late night/West coast help, lol.  It took 10 responses before someone pulled out the SSA stats and it seems that all of the ones were unaware of this info and simply used personal experience.  Really, no one had a case of insomnia or a MOTN feeding and decided to bump?  Maybe I'm too addicted!

  • I love the name Noah, it will definitely be on our list when the time comes.   Perhaps it is regional, but I do not know any Noah's, of any age in my neck of the woods in Texas.

  • I live in the midwest and I only know of four Noahs.  They vary in age from nine months to 30.  I don't think it is overly popular here.

I think it is an awesome name.

  • My DS is Noah.  We chose it right before the 2009 stats came out.  But by then we were in love with it.  He had about 5 Noah's at his old daycare (not in his class).  There is at least one at his new daycare.  I teach in public school and out of 700 kids we had two Noahs last year.

I love it and I wouldn't change it for the world.  My husband's name is Matt and I REALLY didn't want my son to have 5 Noah's in his class but it may end up that way.

The way I see it, you can't go wrong with a strong Bible name.
