Baby Names

not telling anyone but you girls...

This is my favorite board to visit, I truly value all of your opinions.  My husband and I do not want to share our name with friends and family so I am turning to all of you for help.  What do you think of the name Blake Ashley or Blake Alexandra for our little girl?  We are also open to suggestions, we have a generic last name so are looking for something a little different but not trendy.  Thank you so much :-)

Re: not telling anyone but you girls...

  • It's really cute and both names flow well, I'm just not a huge fan of boy names on girls.

  • I love the name Blake for a girl. IDK why but I do :) I like the combo Blake Alexandra better. GL

  • Of the two, I prefer Blake Alexandra.

I think you will not get much support on this board for using a top-100 boy's name for a girl. I don't really care very much about the "boy names for girls" issue, but I do care about the popularity issue. You say you're looking for something "a little different," so I would say that Blake's high popularity for boys (it has been in the top 100 every year since 1989) might make it too common for you.

As an alternative, you might consider Blair, which is similar to Blake in many ways, but is not popular or trendy for either boys or girls.

  • I think it's alright, would much prefer Blair like pp suggested. Blake seems a bit too harsh for a girls name to me.

  • I would classify using a boy's name on your girl as trendy.

I was also going to suggest Blair as an alternative.

    I really like Alexandra, though!

  • Blake is NMS, but there's nothing wrong with it. I love Alexandra though! It has been on our list for each baby!

    and its trendy

    Brooke?

  • I usually don't mind boys names for girls, but Blake for a girl would take a certain type of girl to pull off.

    I'd avoid it.

ETA: I like the suggestions of Brooke and Blair.

  • I like both Blake Ashley and Blake Alexandra for a girl. I don't like all boys names on girls but i do love this one for a girl. And the popularity wouldn't change my mind because I'm sure Blake is not that popular on the GIRL list. As long as you wouldn't mind her having boy Blakes in her class....go for it!

  • I don't think the flow is right.

Ashley Blake or Alexandra Blake sounds better to me, flow wise.

Names that I would consider different but not really trendy would be:

    Arden

    Briar

    Camilla

    Dahlia

    Everly

    Fallon

    Gisela

    Juniper

    Lilith

    Marlena

    Phoebe

    Taryn

    Zara

    Good luck!

  • Not a fan, sorry. I don't like Blake for a girl. Ashley is a bit dated to me. Alexandra is nice, a bit boring though.

Blake for a girl makes me think of Blake Lively, so I'd assume you are a fan of Gossip Girl...  She's gorgeous, but the show is pretty dumb.

  • I am also in the opinion that I'm not a fan of Blake as a name for a girl.  Also Blake to me is a surname since I know someone by the name of Alexandra Blake.

I am usually ok (depending on the name) with some unisex or more dominately male names on femals, but not in this case.  Sorry.

  • I like Blake, but I think of the guy from Workaholics. I just don't see it on a girl that well.

Of the too names though I would pick Alexandra. And I like the suggestions people are making about Blair and Brooke.

  • My middle name is Blake, so we'll be naming our LO Blake if it's a girl or a boy.  In my area, there are quite a few female Blakes of all ages, so I feel like it won't be side-eyed by friends and acquaintances. I personally think it's like Parker for a girl or a boy.  They both work.

Of your two choices, I like Blake Alexandra the best!

  • I recently stumbled upon the name "Blakely" for a girl and I absolutely LOVE it.  It didn't get great reviews from the women in my family though - unfortunately they're a huge influence in my life and I want them to like my child's name.  Thought you might like it, because it adds a touch of femininity yet it's still edgy.  Good luck!
