3rd Trimester

1hr glucose test prep?...

I don't have to schedule an appointment for my test, it's first come first serve. But my Dr. didn't give me any instructions except to go and get the test done. Can someone share with me what your requirements or recommendations were from your Dr. or Lab for the 1hr. glucose test prep? I plan on going at 7a.m, so when should my last meal/drink be etc.

TIA

Re: 1hr glucose test prep?...

  • No requirements. You just go and drink the drink - wait an hour and have blood drawn.

I had mine done last week at my 28wk appt. I didn't even know I was getting it done, she just asked if I had time to do it while I was there.

  • My doc had me fast all but water the 8hrs prior to the test.. other than that ya go in drink the syrup, sit an hour without any other fluids/foods then have a blood test. Good luck!

  • I ate normally, but my test was at 11 am.  If you're going at 7 am, you might eat something small, but no official requirements for the 1 hour.
  • I wasn't allowed to eat 2 hours before my test. But make sure your nice and hydrated when you get your blood drawn! It really helped me with the drink and waiting an hour on all that sugar.
  • I had a small breakfast (2 eggs and 1 piece of toast), waited an hour, then went in for the drink and blood test.  I passed!

  • My 1 hr was non fasting, so no need to prepare. They just said don't eat a super heavy meal right before you go. GL!
  • My doc didn't tell me I had to fast but I've heard you are more likely to pass if you do, so I had nothing but a couple sips of coffee before mine.  Basically, just stay away from anything sugary and drink a lot of water before and after.
  • find out if it is fasting or non-fasting.  If it is your 1st one, I don't think you need to fast at all.  I had a normal breakfast the day of mine, and I was kind of afraid I would fail mine (ewww, a longer glucose test would not be fun), but luckily my result was 72! I am not exactly sure what the ok range is, but I know for a normal adult the ideal should be between 60 - 110. Good luck!

  • No fasting for me, but definately stay hydrated.  My dr also said to avoid sugars right before, as that may throw off the test.

Exactly this, but I drank water which I was told was okay.  I wouldnt' do anything differently or try to change how your results would be because you need to know if you actually have GD for the baby's health.

  • There are no official "requirements" but it was recommended to have it first thing in the morning before a meal so as to prevent any meals (sugars) effect the results.... While I was in there this other mom-to-be had a Starbucks frap next to her and the nurse freaked out and said she would probably fail, poor mama was pissed since she had called to make sure there were no "rules." Good luck, it's so easy just boring!

  • I was told not to fast, and to eat as I normally would but avoid "heavy carbs" for dinner the night before, such as a big bowl of pasta.  It was my brother in law's birthday that night and I ended up eating crab cakes, salad and a piece of cake.  I passed easily.
  • I even ate a cupcake an hour before mine, and I passed.  I was told it's suposed to be random.
