pumping and storing bm - going back to work....

I need some advice...

So I'm getting ready to go back to work in a couple weeks and LO will be staying with ILs. Some days will be really long - she could be there as long as 10 hours or more. I will not be able to pump while I'm at work since I'll either be driving or in front of an audience. Will I have trouble maintaining my supply by going 10 hours without pumping/feeding?

My next question: how do I start to store bm? Right now I'm finding it hard to feed LO with the milk I have, I still feel like I"m not producing enough for her. When she is still hungry, we supplement with formula once a day. This morning, I fed her on both sides, then she fell asleep and I pumped and managed to get 2 oz. I put that in a storage bag and froze it. Should I be pumping more often to see if that helps my supply increase?

  • If you try to go 10 hours without pumping/nursing you are going to be miserable.  You will be engorged and it will definitely affect your supply.  If you are going to be in the car a lot get a battery powered pump and a hands free pumping bra.  You could put a cardigan or button up over it and drive and pump! Good Luck!

  • You will not be able to go 10 hours and maintain your supply. Ideally, you need to pump as often as LO is eating when apart from you.  Get a car adapter and pump in your car.  I will be doing this when I go back to work b/c I'm on the road a lot going from meeting to meeting.

Pumping 2 oz after feeding on both sides is normal.  Are you pumping at the same time every day?  I only pump once per day after one of the morning feedings b/c that's when your supply tedns to be best.  If you want to increase your freezer stash, pump mulitple times per day.  Make sure you're drinking plenty of water and eating enough.  You can also try Mother's Milk Tea and/or More Milk Plus to boost your supply.  I usually freeze milk in 4 oz portions.  DS1 preferred freshly pumped milk so I'd use mostly fresh milk and split the frozen milk between the first 2 bottles of the day.  Those bottles were at least 50-75% freshly pumped milk.
