Baby Names

Leah/Lia

The meaning of a name will completely sway my opinion of a name, negative or positive. I have a name book called "Name Book" by Dorothy Astoria in which the name Leah means gazelle. I have only heard it mean weary or cow in the past. Has anyone ever heard it have the meaning gazelle before?

Which brings me to the spelling Lia which is Greek and means bringer of good news.

Anyway, I would just like some opinions on Leah/Lia.

Re: Leah/Lia

  • I know a Lia. Love it! I prefer that spelling to Leah.

  • I think if you went with "Lia", she'd forever be correcting people on how to spell her name. That might not bother you, I don't know... but for me, it's definitely more appealing to go with Leah and save her the trouble.

I've heard of Leah meaning gazelle before! It's my daughter's middle name (and my mom's, and her mom's...). Here's the definition from Urban Dictionary:

Biblical name: Hebrew origin, meaning "Gazelle" which is "beauty and grace", "also worthy cow" as in biblical days cows were very valuable and treasured.

  • I've taught about 3 Lia's and I knew 1 Leah when growing up and have 1 Leah in my class this year.  I go back and forth with the spelling.  Sometimes I like Lia better others Leah.  Probably depends on your last name.  Both are nice!

  • I think both are lovely. Leah is sweet and traditional, whereas Lia is more cute and youthful.

  • I also like both spellings. I particularly like the use of Lia if you have an Italian background (Lia is the Italian variation on Leah). If I had to pick, I'd probably choose Leah. Both are nice, though!

  • My DD is Leah and I thought the meaning was "weary".  It don't love the meaning but it didn't sway me (obviously) from using it.

  • my name is Lya (same pronunciation)....while i did/do have to correct some people as to how to say it, it doesnt bother me that much...i love my name (it's also a family name - my grandmother's & her grandmothers)...so that makes me love it more.

that being said...i think I prefer Lia more...but probably b/c it's a little different, like mine!
