Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Did your LO drop 2nd nap on their own or did you help?

DS has been a pretty solid napper for a while (though night sleep is atrocious), where he sleeps about 1 hour 20 minutes at each nap, twice a day.  Lately, though, it's taking longer to get him down to sleep.  He goes down about 3 1/2 - 4 hours after he wakes, and he wakes around 7/7:30am.

The problem is, his second nap ends up being around 3:30 or 4pm, which makes his bedtime around 8.  For whatever reason when he goes to bed at 8 or later, he has frequent night terrors and is up almost every hour the whole night!  We found that a 7-7:30 asleep time gives him (and us!) the most restful night.

My questions -

  • Did your LO drop the second nap on his/her own, or did you help that along?
  • Also, if he/she still has two naps a day and goes down around 7/7:30pm, what are your wake-up and approximate nap times?
  • If you helped your LO drop the second nap, how did you do it?
Thanks!

Re: Did your LO drop 2nd nap on their own or did you help?

  • we are just starting to drop the second nap I feel like. In the past two weeks has taken maybe 3 afternoon naps. I noticed him fighting me at his 4 o'clock nap (hitting my chest, poking my eyes, talking, kicking) so I only give him about 20 minutes before I bring him back out into the living room. I also have been keeping him super busy and before I know it its 4:30pm. If he is really crabby I will let him sleep for a little 30 minute cat nap and that usually gives him a nice refresher. But I'm noticing no matter what it really doesn't affect his bedtime, still 8:30.

  • It was mostly daycare enforced. At 15 months, he moved to the other room where they only nap once a day so he basically had to adjust. He probably would have gotten there *sort of* soon, but he wasn't ready yet. He was/is a very early riser, so he needed that morning nap. What he was doing was taking a longer and longer (2+  hour) morning nap, and a shorter afternoon nap. It was just sort of hard to push him to take that first nap later, but it was a pretty fast adjustment.
  • DS dropped it pretty much on his own, but we helped a little. He still might take a second nap sometimes, but it's very brief.

We did the cold turkey method. DS slept from 12-2, and when it came around for his afternoon nap, we went outside to play. He did fine and was so involved in what he was doing, he didn't even notice.

  • My DD was still taking 3 naps up until a week ago. She would get up at 5, nap around 7, then 10, and 2.

Now for the last few days she's been up at 7, naps at 9:30 and 1:30 and goes to bed arpund 7:308. I wish I could say she's STTN but she doesn't.

I tried messing with her schedule without success. She pretty much sleeps when she's tired. I follow her cues.

  • Around 12 months she started fighting her second nap on her own. For a few weeks after that, I would say she would take a second nap 50% of the time. By 13 months, she was down to one nap.

  • My LO dropped her morning nap before she was even a year old. Has been napping from 2-4 (most days) since.

  • DS is dropping his nap now at 14 months.  He was giving me weak second naps or fighting it, so I've been pushing his first back and keeping him up for the rest of the day when he wakes.  I put him down sometime between 11 and 12 and he will nap anywhere from 2-4 hours.

DD dropped hers completely on her own at 14 months and as she got older it moved to a bit later, around 1pm.  She dropped her nap completely just before 2.5.  Not fun.

  • DS dropped 2nd nap pretty early compared to most but would sleep a full 12 hours or more at night. Now at 17 months: awake at 7ish..nap at 1..up by 3 and bed by 830and if we r lucky..sometimes 9 All the books I read said if they are consistently waking at night maybe naps are too frequent.

  • LO is 12 months and naps 2x a day.  Over the past couple months, she would skip a nap on occasion and her bedtime would move later for up to a week or so, but then everything would return to "normal".  I attribute it to new skills, colds, teething etc.  If the routine changed for over a week (skipped naps, later bedtime), I would take that as a cue to try one nap.  My sleep guide suggests that most babes are ready for 1 nap by 18 months, but of course there are going to be babes who are ready before or later.  GL.
