3rd Trimester

How many bottles do you need for LO?

I was looking at bottles. How many 4oz ones should I have before switching to 9oz? Does LO actually drink up to 9 oz?

Re: How many bottles do you need for LO?

  • I only have 4, 4 oz bottles. 9 oz bottles also hold 4oz too! And yes, DD started drinking 8 oz at a time around 7 months, if I remember correctly. I think I have 6, 8oz bottles

  • You're probably going to get lots of different opinions on this, but we just used the same three 8 oz glass Evenflo bottles the entire time. I prefer to have about 3 that I love and can keep clean than a whole cabinet full that I can't keep up with (too much clutter and bottle parts everywhere).

I never bought the smaller ones since they were about the same price as the larger ones. I just didn't get the point of buying  both since we knew our child would need the larger ones eventually anyway.

Those same 3 bottles are all ready and sterilized (new nipples/parts of course) for our next baby arriving any day now. Best deal ever.

  • It depends.  If you plan to BF, you might not need more than 3 or 4 bottles (for while you're at work, if you plan to return to work) - while I was BFing (until DS was 8 months old), he never took more than 4.5oz in a bottle, so the 5oz bottles we started out with were fine.  When we switched to formula, he started out with 6oz bottles and did eventually move up to 8oz before we weaned off the bottle at about 12.5 months.  We still didn't need more than 4 bottles to last us a whole day, so we had 4 5oz bottles and 4 9oz bottles.

If you plan to FF from the beginning, LO will be taking 1-2oz every 2 hours or so to start, around the clock.  Decide how many times a day you want to be washing bottles, and decide how many bottles you need from there.  I'd recommend at least 6-8, so you can get by with just washing bottles first thing in the morning (overnight bottles) and after dinner (daytime bottles), rather than having to wash bottles constantly all day long.

  • We started out with 3 of the 9oz LifeFactory glass bottles, but I was washing them all.the.time. We now have a total of 5 and that number is perfect! My advice is to start out small because you can always add more if need be.
  • I'm a BF mom, but I usually have a few bottles around. I don't think we ever actually got to the 9oz bottles until close to like 9 months old. My kids are "snackers" though............

I have to buy some new bottles, so I'll probably get 3 or 4 different ones to try and see what baby takes. Sometimes a different bottle is preferred. Then I can always get more bottles.

We plan to FF, don't want to have to buy new bottles later so we bought all 8 oz. BPA free bottles.  We bought 16 (4, 4 pkgs.).  And we bought the simple kind that only have the normal top with a nipple... nothing fancy because we don't want to have to wash a million and one pieces.  We had Dr. Browns with our first and we switched him to the cheap BPA kind and there was no difference in fussiness.

  • I have 12-4oz evenflo bottles and 6-9oz Parent's Choice bottles.  I bfed and supplementd.  The evenflo pack was from TRU when DS was born and they were interchangeable with my pump so i also used them as storage for BM.  I switched to formula completely around 8ish months and during growth spurts or teething when DS didn't want solids he would drink 9oz.

  • Lurking....I have a 3yo and 3 month old. I skipped the 4 oz bottles and just bought the 8oz ones. IMO, there is no need for the smaller ones...u can put 2oz in a larger bottle. I only use 3 bottles and just wash them but it depends on you. And yes, my older dd ate 8 oz as she got older.
  • I breastfed and pumped to go to work with DS. It took us going through several different types of bottles before he would finally take the bottle. I would not buy too many of any certain kind of bottle until you know what type your LO will take.

  • We have like 4 4oz that came with the Medela pump. That was plenty for us since he was BFing most of the time. They are like new so we are using them for DD too just replacing the nipples. If you end up FF they tend to drink more and bump up quickly so I still wouldn't get a whole lot of them.

  • Thanks for posting this question. I plan to BF while on leave and then FF once LO goes to daycare. Considering, we will have bottles for daycare, I bought 12 4oz and plan to open only one 3pk right off the get go since I plan to BF. If 12 is too many, I can always keep for future shower gifts or retun to store.
