Adoption

What kinds of things are you really glad you WON'T be...

...passing on to your child?  I know a lot of parents relish the genetic tie to their child (eyes like mine, same mannerisms etc), but I lately I have found myself noticing things I'm really glad I won't be passing on.  Some serious, some light-hearted.

On the serious side, I'm glad I won't be passing on our family histories of heart issues and cancer.

On the lighter side I'm glad we won't be passing on our total musical inability.  We both love music, but can't sing worth crap or play an instrument.  DH can't even sing and clap simultaneously at church!  It's pretty bad.

And we are also both horrible at math so we hope our little man will be inclined to math and not need any sort of help with his homework!  Smile

What about you?

  • My height (for a boy)

    My hair (for a girl)

DH's family has lots of lady issues, so that for a daughter.

Singing ability for both of us and lack of rhythm for DH. When we knew we were going to adopt, one of the things we joked about is that "now we can have a family band!" We joke that all of our kids will be musical and DH will get a shaker with nothing in it and I will get the cowbell.

  • Multiple sclerosis... my mom and my sister have it. They say it's "probably" not genetic, but... I'm not sure how you'd explain two members of my immediate family having it. I'm worried all the time about being diagnosed myself, and I worry about ButterBean having to deal with it later in her life. At least that's not something I'll have to worry about with our next little one!

Heading to China in November 2014 to bring our son home!

  • On the serious side, I'm glad DD won't get DH's family history of diabetes (type I and type II are in his family at present) and sleep apnea. Or my family's heart disease traits.

On the non-physical side I'm glad DD won't inherit the ingrained negativity that comes from DH's side of the family. She's way happier than all of them combined

  • On the physical side- DH's family history of heart problems, on my side- thyroid problems, asthma, allergies, joint problems, etc...

Non-physical side- I am sure there are things but I can't think of them right now.  Maybe I need to go be around my family and his to remember.

  • I've given this a lot of thought!  My chubby genes and MH's family's cancer genes (both his mom and his dad, one sister, and aunts).  Unfortunately, my anxiety issues are part nature, part nurture.  Stick out tongue

Moving forward with domestic infant adoption!

Home study approved 5/13, now just waiting...

  • Haha! My family's male pattern baldness and my husband's acne. It was really hard for him in high school.

I am also praying that we don't have or "acquire" (as one of my adoptive friends says) any more children with my personality - I was difficult to parent!

    This.

I am kind of the opposite.  No real health problems, but seeing what our BM has been going through, I don't think our LO will be as healthy as us.   We are hoping it comes down to nurture vs. nature since we hope our LO will be active like we are, but only time will tell.  Either way, we are prepared to deal with whatever we encounter.

    Failed Matches - December 2012, May 2013, December 2013
Moved on to  gestational surrogacy with a family friend who is our angel and due 7/23/15

  • I am just... excessively clumsy. I'm so happy that there may be some graceful children in my house. I get tangled up in my feet, drop stuff, straight up FALL way too much.
  • Thankfully not too many medical issues in our family. My mom has ulcerative colitis and dad has severe eczema and neurogenic dermatitis, both autoimmune diseases, so I do worry that I, or any bio children, would be more susceptible to autoimmune diseases. On a lighter note, I kind of hope our children are a little more open and free-spirited than we are (to an extent). Our SW actually brought this up during the homestudy because I had mentioned how different my sister and I were growing up, and I do think it would be nice to have a child who was more open and a little less high-strung. That is very much DH and I :) I'm also glad that our child won't inherit the seriously antisocial personality of my FIL's side of the family (FIL, BIL, aunts, grandparents). DH and his mother's family have all had reflux since they were children also- it will be nice to not pass that along!

  • Horrible eyesight - the only person I've ever met with worse eyesight than mine is my husband.  Also I have a slew of stomach issues as does my whole family.  My DH has an iron stomach though so hopefully DS will take after him.

  • The nose.  My DH and I both have ridiculously large noses.  Seriously.  DD got lucky!

On my side of the family there's a ridiculous number of issues- weight, cancer, a genetic heart condition.

^ THIS! I have more bandaids on my arms and legs than a small child at any given time. It's so bad. Once I broke my foot... just by walking.

DD's birth parents are both tall and thin so I'm hoping she won't have our weight issues! (we do eat healthy and exercise, but genetically, DH and I are both fighting a losing battle!)
