We went out to lunch after his first pedi appt at 3 days old.
We go to a weekly play group at various friends houses once a week for my toddler.
I've taken him to the grocery store and Costco a few times as well. Mainly he's just been in the car seat, so it's not like people are touching him or anything like that.
I took her out for short walks in the stroller starting on the second day home from the hospital, I took her to restaurants, stores etc when she was two weeks.
We took her out only to dr visits or friends/family houses when there was not a lot of people there from birth to now.
Surprisingly, our ped told us not to take her in public until her 4 month shots were administered. She said no restaurants or stores during peak hours. My DD is healthy, so that was not a factor in the doc's advice. We thought this might be a bit extreme, but so far we have managed to abide. I think at some point my DH and I will take her out to outdoor restaurants prior to her 4th month, but it was just a major precaution the doc recommended.

I'm always pretty amazed that there are doctors out there who recommend this. For starters, it does nothing to help a mother's post partum well being. But beyond that, it's pretty ludicrous. People are coming into your home who have been in contact with the outside world. Unless strangers are coming up to your kid in the mall and literally breathing all over them, it's not a huge deal. Plus, when you have a second kid and you first is in daycare? Well, you might as well go rub your newborn on the handrail of a public bus. Nothing's germier than a daycare kid
Yeah i would laugh in the face of a doctor that told me to keep my baby in the house for 4 months. That's a surefire way to get mom hospitalized for PPD.
Maybe he suggested that because of a whooping cough outbreak though,as babies get their second round of the shots at 4 mos. Still, I think it is a very unreasonable request.
we were on a very strict feeding schedule the first 2 weeks so only went to (lots of) doctor appts. When dh went back to work at 2 weeks I started taking her out a few times a week. I don't let anyone touch her and I use hand sanitizer on myself before I pick her up. I am much happier getting out.
I took LO out when she was only 4 days old. We go out everyday. I think as long as you're not passing LO around where she can pick up germs it's fine. We take her to the park everyday for a walk, and other places like stores and restaurants.
Our son was in the NICU for a month, and we were advised the morning we took him home to avoid taking him to places like the grocery store, mall, etc. for at least 4 weeks. Sure, we had him around family members and took him for walks in our back yard, but we didn't take him out in general public for about 3 weeks. So far he's done well-- grocery store trip was interesting (thankfully DH was with me.. grocery shopping was taken to a whole new extreme with the little one), and he's been to my DH's company picnic and my unit's summer picnic. He hasn't caught a major cold or set off his apnea monitor yet, so things are looking good.

Whenever YOU, the parents, are comfortable. Personally I have no problem taking my LOs out early on. Trips are short, baby is close by, and I'm not concerned about germs (generally speaking. I wouldn't of course, hang out with sick people while LO is brand new). All 3 of my LOs have been out with me within the first week, for sure. I could never wait 6 weeks (which I sometimes see pediatricians recommending to women on here).
That said, however, I do believe it's very important for mother and baby to have some sort of lying-in period, where they do little more than sleep, eat, nurse, and bond.
Our case may be a little different bc our LO is adopted. We were blessed with being able to be there from the time he was born. We stayed in a hotel for 3 weeks in the town/state he was born. We started going out at 3 days. One of the days he was 10 days we went to one of the canyons with his other mommy and siblings and had a picnic in the mountains. At approx 2 weeks we went to the zoo with him. We flew home when he was almost 3 weeks. He is a beautiful and healthy baby.
Re: Taking newborn out
We were in thehospital for 6 days but once home we took DD out the next day.
I take her on a daily outting, for walks, to stores, to restaurants. Take advantage of having a summer baby - no flu or rsv!!
