November 2012 Moms

I don't think I need the Rhogam shot..

I have an OB appt tomorrow and I'm scheduled to get the Rhogam shot..but hubs and I are both A-...so why do I need the shot?  I'm honestly curious, because biologically our baby can't be positive for the blood protein since neither of us have it in our blood to give to her.

We both give blood regularly and are positive we are A-, anyone else go through this?  Is there something I'm missing?

  • Did you ask why you are being given the shot? You have every right to question your Dr.

  • My only guess would be that sadly the DRs see people who are unsure about their baby's father, or might lie about it Sad...so they try to get as many mothers as possible to be safe?

  • Ditto PPs, you can definitely opt out, your DH would probably have to have his own bloodwork done just to verify what you already know. But the reason why it's routine is in cases where the baby could be someone else's, even though the woman swears there's no chance. People lie sometimes.

yep, it's estimated that 10% of babys biological father is not the person the mother claimed. So they don't want to take the chance.

  • I am O neg, they mentioned the Rhogam shot last time. I asked if I need it since DH is A neg. They told me to bring in documentation of his blood type and they won't give me the shot. They said they don't want to risk it without paperwork to back it up. I'm taking in DHs Red Cross blood donor card and his military dog tags.

  • I think since being Rh neg is associated with a recessive gene, OP is correct.  I know it's NOT the same for couples who are both say O+ because they can both have the recessive gene (like my parents... I'm O-).  So, no harm in asking your doctor.

On the other hand, if she really thinks you need it, then I would get it.  They would rather be safe than sorry, and I'm sure for a few moments of discomfort, you would too.

  • I'm A- and DH is O- and I've refused the rhogam each time. I was asked to bring in his blood donor card to verify, but they didn't even look at it this time around.

  • I'm O- and so is my husband. We had his doctor run a blood test as soon as I found out I was pregnant and we gave the paper work to my Obgyn. Then haven't even mentioned the shot since.

  • Thanks for the replies ladies, I brought in a copy of DH's donor card ( thanks pp for the idea!) and my doc agreed it wasn't needed.
  • When I found out I was O neg, DH had his blood tested.  My midwife said that if he was negative, and I was SURE he was the daddy Wink then I didn't have to get it.  Unfortunately, DH is A+ (or has "A plus blood!" as he put it when he got the results), so I still have to get it.
