Baby Names

Giving baby his father's name...

I posted a few days about about our current name favorite for a boy,

Lennon Thomas

And the feedback was that maybe Thomas Lennon was a better name.

Thomas is my husband's name (although he goes by Tom) and we have discussed naming what would be our only son after him but I wasn't really into it.

What do you think?

Re: Giving baby his father's name...

  • I think Thomas Lennon has a better flow. He would not technically be a jr. unless your DH mn is Lennon.

That being said I don't think naming him after his dad is a big deal. I don't see it as narcissistic. My mother gave me her MN and DH is a jr. I would like to pass at least one of DH names onto a boy and possibly my mn to a girl. They are mostly in honor of grandparents and not ourselves, but they are also ours (if that makes sense). That's how names are passed down in our families. Our family tree dates back 12 generations on my side and I see the pattern my family uses in naming children, so maybe that why I don't think it's that big of a deal.

  • I don't really like Lennon either.  Perhaps that's why some suggested it be a middle name instead.  My husband is the 3rd Victor.  My brother is a Jr. and has been called Jr. his entire life.  He's 33 and we all still call him Jr.  Needless to say, I've had enough of the passing down of names.  But, it's a personal choice.
  • My husband is named after his father and wants his son (if we have a boy) to be named after him. I don't *love* his name, but this is very common practice in Italian families, so I don't think it's right of me to take that away from my husband.

It's up to you and your husband.

  • If you like the flow of Thomas Lennon better you can still call him by his middle name. I've gone by my middle name since I was born and it really isn't an issue.
  • Okay, I'm usually the last person to make or care about pop culture/celebrity associations.  But Thomas Lennon is an actor, and for me to have heard of a person must mean he's kind of a big deal, right?

Anyway, on the one hand I like Thomas as a first name much better than Lennon and I do think Thomas Lennon flows better (but maybe just because of the actor).  I don't think the fact that it's the name of some dude people have heard of eliminates it as a FN/MN combo.

On the other hand, I'm not really into naming sons after their fathers either.  I don't think I'm as opposed as some other people on the BN board, but it's not something I would do personally, and I like my husband's name a lot.

So I'm no help either.  I'd probably use Thomas as a MN and an entirely different first name, but I don't know what name.

  • Thanks so much for your thoughtful replies.

I'm not 100% on Lennon, it has been the name we both agreed on through two pregnancies (both girls) so we never really had to use it. So

I love Thomas too, and my husband is strictly Tom. IF I ever went down this road, I would want our son to be named Thomas. For some reason this feels different than another Tom. Or Tommy. Or Jr. But I have a feeling that my husband's family would call him Little Tom, because they have a history of using 'Little' in his family. It would drive. me. insane.

I love both my daughters names. I never hesitated. I just want to find a boys name that makes me feel the same way!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If you like Lennon Thomas, then go with that.  The other idea would be to go Thomas Lennon and just call him Lennon.

In my family, my grandfather, uncle and brother all have the same first name...  my uncle went by his middle name.  For most my life, I didn't even know he had the same name as my grandfather and brother.
