Deadbeat parents...

Anyone else? We still haven't baby proofed so we have to follow her and redirect her all day. Poor kid still doesn't have a bedroom.

We are having a bunch (9) in-laws over today. I'm wondering if they will ask to see her room. It might be challenging for them to not comment on the crib in our room.

The positive, we are close to being done with painting the basement and we're going to order the carpet tomorrow.

Re: Deadbeat parents...

  • I do not think that lack of babyproofing=deadbeat parent.  I refuse to put up baby gates all over my house.  I think following your child and redirecting her is very appropriate unlike sticking your kid in baby jail all day.  You are allowing her to explore her surroundings and making sure she doesnt get injured.

I agree. We will put a gate at the stairs but that's about all we will do. The deadbeat comment was tongue in cheek.

  • I agree...I wouldn't consider it "dead beat".

DS has been crawling since the middle of June. We still don't have much baby proofing done. Instead I bought one of those big octagon pens for him to play in. We've had the flooring torn up in (what plans to be) the playroom for over a month now. It's a 3 seasons porch and will be too cold for him to be out there before it gets finished. His room is more-less stable...but I still don't have things hung on the walls. Having a baby is busy! I brush it off as parenthood. "Deadbeat" is WAAAAYYYY below this. :)

"baby jail" made me giggle. That's what DH called the octagon pen we bought. However we aren't using it as a pen. I used pieces to block off the TV stand because it's got glass shelves with pointy corners, and I use part to block of the back door when needed. Other than that we also redirect - mainly away from the dogs water bowl. I like watching to see where she will explore. The only part I hate is that she can't get from the living room to her room. We have a gate that blocks off that part of the house because the dog kept going in our bedroom, the nursery, and the bathroom and eating things that could make him sick.

  • I've only started babyproofing one room, the living room, because we're hoping to move before he's super mobile (right now he only army crawls backwards, lol.) He doesn't have a bedroom yet either! I'm sure there's some family judgment going on but I don't mind because DS doesn't :)

This exactly. We are not babyproofing either. I would only put a gate up if we had stairs in this case we do not. I did put those outlet plugs in but other than that we will watch her and make sure she is out of harms way.

  • We haven't baby proofed yet but I need too soon because DS is going to be crawling any day. I plan to use outlet covers and the cabinet locks in the kitchen for the cabinets with glass and move the cleaning products to the top of the pantry as an extra precaution. Other than that probably not much. Our living, dining room and kitchen is all open floor plan so there is really no where to "gate off".
