How are you guys getting all these USs?

For those of you getting these crazy early ultrasounds, I'm just curious about the reasoning. I didn't get any U/Ss with my last babe until 20 weeks.

Are you guys all IVF, or do you have h/o miscarriages?

I hope this doesn't come off as snotty I just want to know what the trick is :

Re: How are you guys getting all these USs?

  • I get 2. 12 and 18 weeks. I'm assuming most of these ladies have a history of problems either conceiving or carrying a baby.

  • Honestly, the only reason I will is because I'm going to a clinic that I have no intention of continuing my care, solely because I know that they do a dating u/s at the first appt.

Even with a previous m/c, my MW doesn't do early u/s. I figure knowledge is power and since I know the other clinic offers them, I might as well take advantage.

side note :: whatcha doin in Wisconsin if you're a Minnesota gal?! ;)

  • We called to make an appt with our midwife, and instead they offered a 7.5 week ultrasound + consult with a nurse.  We do have a history of loss, which is noted in our file, so that may be why.  They referred to it as a "viability ultrasound".  I'll be honest, we're super grateful.
The word you're looking for is SEX.  I promise.  No, it's not gender.  It's sex.  You're welcome.
  • I think it also depends on the doctor's office. Mine does an initial u/s at 6 weeks to make sure the baby is viable before scheduling an appointment with the OB - that is their standard.

This is my first pregnancy, non-medicated and I have no history of m/c.

  • Hey, I'm in MN too!

This is my first pregnancy -- no history of m/c and no infertility / IVF.  I went in early due to some spotting / cramping, to have a pregnancy confirmation appointment, and they found my progesterone was low and put me on suppositories.  Two days after that, I got a call saying I could schedule an "early OB ultrasound."  No idea why -- I'll be 35 when I deliver and I'm overweight, so maybe that combined with the low progesterone has them wanting to watch me closely.

    U/S was great though.

  • I've had 2 ectopics and one miscarriage so they do early ultrasounds to locate the pregnancy and determine viability.

Also, a little "trick" you can do (if you're in to that) is tell them you don't know when your LMP was, and they will give you an ultrasound do determine your due date.  ;)

  • A lot of the times is just depends on your Dr and what they do. I had an early u/s last time...with no history of m/c or anything.

  • My OB office does a ultrasound at 8 to 10 weeks to date the pregnancy and make sure it's viable. Many women have missed miscarriages and it can be dangerous to not get a d and c immediately. So it's standard at my practice. it's a good thing because I had a mm and had to go in for a dnc since my body wasn't eliminating on it's own. Not to mention how horrible it would have been to go 8 to 12 weeks thinking all is well and it's not. Im actually surprised that not all offices confirm with an US. Also your dates can be off. According to my lmp my due date was 1/1/12 according to the US my edd was 1/7/12 which I knew was right because according to my opk I ovulated at day 21 not day 14.

  • My OB's office offers them at 7-8 weeks to check things out, 12 weeks if you choose the NT scan, and at 20 weeks for the anatomy scan.
  • I go to a Specialist's office.  I had one at 4 weeks which was too early, then I had one yesterday at 8 weeks so they could figure out my EDD.  And I think I have one every month after that.  It's just standard procedure here.

  • I have a history of miscarriage, so this time around I am being monitored from the time of my BFP.  Early ultrasound is part of this.

  • My last pregnancy I had an u/s at 6.5 weeks because I was having some spotting and cramping, when I called in they had me come for some b/w and 'urget' u/s just to be sure all was well. Otherwise I wouldn't get one till 20 weeks.

  • I wasn't supposed to get one until 20 weeks but I had some spotting problems and pain.
  • Well thanks guys now I get it! I was just worried I wasn't getting good care, or something :

And for those that asked...I was born raised in The Cities, but now live in Ellsworth, WI. It's pretty close to the border I get to St. Paul about once a week, so I still feel like I belong to both :

  • Your comment doesn't come off as snotty at all. I'm honestly curious too (and this is my second pregnancy, and I've had the "dating" ultrasound at my first appointment for my son and for this LO). I didn't expect to have any ultrasounds until week 20, but both of my OBGYNs recommended the early one. I didn't have a problem with it, but I don't anticipate having any mother ultrasounds except for the 20-week one (unless of course there's a problem). My current OB told me if I would like to do a "growth" ultrasound at 33 weeks he would be happy to do that. I have no intention of doing so, and I plan on declining that one.

  • I had a missed miscarriage discovered at 10 weeks where the HB stopped between 8-9 weeks.  May have been caused by my polyps that were dicovered later.  So this time my OB is having me come in at 7 weeks to do first U/S with a follow up probably around 10-11 weeks to make sure everything is good this time.

  • This is my first pregnancy and I don't have a history of health issues or any sort. The doctor wants to set a more "official" due date, so I have an u/s in 2 weeks!

I was surprised, but I'm really excited :)

This.  I was also told this up front when I scheduled my appointment.  Granted I'll be 8weeks when I have my first appointment, but the u/s is first and then I come back later in the day to see the OB.

  • No tricks here...its just standard at my doctor's office to do the first ultrasound at 8 weeks at the first prenatal appt.

  • IVF and a history of loss. And I paid for it ... no really, there's an extra OB package with my RE for out of pocket patients that basically lets you come in 1-2 times a week for ultrasound and bloodwork (and I get to call panicked at every sign of spotting and ask for a reassurance ultrasound) until you graduate at 10 weeks. Not cheap but totally worth it to stay a high priority patient until I'm almost out of the first trimester. I've been in three times already and go back on Friday to see my little dragon again :)

I figure we've paid well over 60k in infertility treatments to get this pregnancy, I might as well get the fancy glamor shots of baby to look at.

I had a LEEP procedure done a little over a year ago and they need to check to make sure my Cervix stays closed until I hit Viability day. • My first appt comes with a u/s - assuming it's to date and make sure all is well. I wouldn't have it any other way. I'll be going in at 8w4d and I think that's a good time to see how things are. I'm not sure if I'll be offered another at 12w or will have to wait until 20+...but I couldn't bare to wait much more than 8-10w to see that it is a healthy pregnancy.
  • The trick???

For me it was secondary infertility and 18 painful months of let-downs, including a miscarriage.

    Good luck with that.

  • My practice does your first between 8 and 9 weeks, at 12 weeks if you opt for the NT scan, and at 20 weeks.  You get another on your due date if you haven't delivered to check fluid levels and another week after that if still carrying.  I only had one early yesterday because of strong cramping and back pain on Friday; they wanted to make sure everything was settled into my uterus and not elsewhere.

    Sad Sorry Weez.

Yea, sorry if this seemed a little b!tchy OP.  I'm still pretty sensitive about all this and asking what the "trick" is kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

  • I had a MMC in April, and when I made my first appointment for this pregnancy, I asked my doctor if she needed to see me sooner due to my history. She said no, but that for my own piece of mind she would do an informal U/S just to date the pregnancy since there is not much to see before 7 or 8 weeks. I opted not to go in - I will wait until my first, regular appointment at 9 weeks.

  • Hey everyone. I am 4 weeks today and this is my first, so I was shocked when my doc said they wouldn't see me before 8 weeks but I guess it's normal after reading these posts. I'm really nervous about waiting that long to see if everything is okay. My temps dropped today and I really want to get a blood test to check my levels but do you all think it's just too early to worry?

Most docs do not do blood levels and things like that unless they feel they need to (some do confirm with a blood test, though).  Your body is going through a ton of changes and it's probably in your best interest to stop temping at POAS at this point, or you're going to drive yourself crazy.

    Best of luck!

It's just so hard after temping for 6 months straight! :) Oh, and I called my doc and she scheduled me to come in for my first sono in 2 weeks (I'll be 6 weeks then) because she thinks I may be farther along, but either way, I'm excited and can't wait!
