DS broke candle holder, can it be saved?

I have this lovely cylinder shaped metal candle holder it's about a foot or so tall. In the center there is a large glass votive shaped holder for the pilar candle itself. When DS pulled it down it broke part of the glass. It would be fine without the glass part, but the glass is glued down to the metal base. I tried turning it upside down and tapping it with a hammer, but that didn't work.

Does anyone have any tips for loosening the glue enough to get the rest of the jagged glass out of it?
