XP: Baby only taking 4-5 oz at daycare @ 10 months?

XP from Working Moms...

Hey everyone... looking for some insight or support here.  DS2 just returned to daycare after being home with me for the summer.  From January-May he took 3 four-ounce bottles of EBM each day at daycare.  We didn't offer any bottles to him over the summer because I'm more of the nurse-at-home mentality.  BUT now he isn't taking much milk at all at school (he's been back for 7 days).  He completely refused the bottle, so I've been sending EBM in a Tommee Tippee sippy cup.  Some days he'll take up to 8 oz but most days it's more like 4-5.  He also eats 3 solid meals (oatmeal/fruit for breakfast, veggie for lunch, Greek yogurt/veggie for dinner) and nurses 3-4 times at home (usually once overnight, 4am, 4pm, and before bed).

Today, his main DCP sent home a note to me expressing her concern about how little milk he took (4 oz).  What should I do?  Is this worth a call to the pedi?  Should I send different types of cups for them to try?  Cut back on solids?  Give him more time to ease back into daycare before doing anything?  Not worry about it?

TIA... (btw, I never had this issue with DS1 - he turned 1 over a summer so we just nursed that summer and then he started on WCM during the day when he returned to daycare and nursed at home).

eta: DS2 is still having wet diapers.  I don't think they are quite as "sopping" heavy as they were...

  • I can't offer any advice as I am dealing with a similar situation. My DD is 6 months old and has never liked the bottle. I BF when I am at home and until recently my mom watched her when I was at work. My mom is the only person who DD will take the bottle from, and begrudgingly at that. Well now my mom is working the same days/time as me and my hubby and sisters are working it out to watch LO...needless to say that she is all but hunger striking while I am away. She has been like this since I went to work in April! I don't know what to tell you. I have given up on my hubby and her using a bottle and moved onto sippy cups. I had also planned on BLW-ing but due to her not taking milk while I am gone I have suggested that my husband also try cereal mixed with BM ( or anything if it means she eats!).

GL you are not the only one with a difficult baby :)

  • Is he nursing more frequently or for longer periods of time at home?  It's fairly common for EBF babies to "reverse cycle," where they pretty much refuse the bottle during the day at daycare and then nurse more often or longer at home to make up for it.

  • I responded on Working Moms.  We went through this exact thing and it was b/c she got 4 teeth at once.  (I think.)

  • At 10 mos, your LO should have 16-24 oz total dairy, from nursing sessions, bottles and solids (yogurt/cheese). It's okay to be on the low end of that range, and it sounds as if 4 oz at dc plus 3 nursing sessions at home is covering it from a nutrition standpoint. Just make sure there are enough wet diapers. If you are concerned about hydration and want him to drink more, make sure dcp is offering milk before solids, or start offering water with solids.
