Hey everyone... looking for some insight or support here. DS2 just returned to daycare after being home with me for the summer. From January-May he took 3 four-ounce bottles of EBM each day at daycare. We didn't offer any bottles to him over the summer because I'm more of the nurse-at-home mentality. BUT now he isn't taking much milk at all at school (he's been back for 7 days). He completely refused the bottle, so I've been sending EBM in a Tommee Tippee sippy cup. Some days he'll take up to 8 oz but most days it's more like 4-5. He also eats 3 solid meals (oatmeal/fruit for breakfast, veggie for lunch, Greek yogurt/veggie for dinner) and nurses 3-4 times at home (usually once overnight, 4am, 4pm, and before bed).
Today, his main DCP sent home a note to me expressing her concern about how little milk he took (4 oz). What should I do? Is this worth a call to the pedi? Should I send different types of cups for them to try? Cut back on solids? Give him more time to ease back into daycare before doing anything? Not worry about it?
TIA... (btw, I never had this issue with DS1 - he turned 1 over a summer so we just nursed that summer and then he started on WCM during the day when he returned to daycare and nursed at home).
eta: DS2 is still having wet diapers. I don't think they are quite as "sopping" heavy as they were...
Re: Baby taking (much) less EBM at daycare @ 10 months?
I could have written this post, except for the part about staying home for the summer. :-) When my LO was 10 months old, she dropped from three 4oz bottles at daycare to baaaarely 2oz a day. They had to force it. I was sending 1oz bottles. It was ridiculous. We took her to the pedi, called the pedi after hours, etc. I posted on here (mostly on the BFing board) and no one really had experienced something similar.
She stayed like this for weeks. WEEKS. She's now 13 months old and takes 3oz bottles. She's never gone back up to where she was before. But that's ok b/c she's older now and doesn't need as much.
What was the cause? For us, it was teeth. She got 4 teeth within days of each other. The top front 4. Then a small break, then 2 bottom ones. She now has those 8 teeth.
Her diapers were DRY after 6+ hours. (This was why we ended up going to the pedi.) Our daycare was also concerned. I was nursing her whenever I could, just to get her to eat something. She nursed fine. She did not nurse like she was starving, it was the same. Just no bottles. She also was no good at a sippy cup (still learning). AND we did BLW so she's just now starting to really eat. I was so scared she was starving. The pedi said no baby will starve itself. Give her time and she'd eat again.
So that's my story. I realize it rambled. Hope it helps!
No, thank you, really! I appreciate your story. Maybe it is teeth... DS2 still just has the bottom 2 and has been having some teething symptoms lately. Thanks again!
Yep, I was going to say teeth too. My DD sometimes doesn't finish all her bottles at daycare. She also may eat overnight at 3am and then won't eat again until 9:30 or 10. Now that her bottoms have popped through, she's eating like crazy again.
I wouldn't worry too much about it, just watch her diaper outputs and call your pedi if she goes more than 6 hours without a wet diaper.
It sounds like he's getting quite a decent amount of breast milk and dairy. My son was taking two 4 oz bottles at daycare at that age, but only nursing 3 other times/day maximum. At 1 year I stopped sending bottles, and tried to switch to a sippy, but my son won't drink anything but water from a sippy. So he was down to 0 oz of milk at daycare at 12 months. My pedi said it wasn't a problem since he nurses at home, and has yogurt and cheese.
It might be worth a call to your pedi just to find out what the minimum ounces of milk they recommend for a baby his age, in order to put your mind at ease. You might be providing enough just in your at-home nursing sessions.
I wouldn't worry about it
From the sounds of it I think your LO is getting enough BM. DD was the same way. Around 9 months she would only drink around 2 to 4oz of BM at daycare but we still nursed 4 times a day. She was eating a ton of solids and drinking water so when it came time for BM she either wasn't hungry for it or knew that she would nurse later and get it.
My DD did the same, although she was never out of daycare. Around the same age she just started losing interest in bottles almost entirely. She was down to just maybe 4 oz of BM during the day, but she didn't change her nursing habits at all at home. I think she was just much more active, more able to do fun things, and couldn't be bothered with sitting and drinking a bottle. She's also always been a good eater, so she was getting calories throughout the day. We ended up starting her on WCM around 11.5 months because it was (almost) useless sending BM bottles.
Our pedi wasn't concerned. She was still growing, eating, and having wet/dirty diapers throughout the day. I think some babies just get too busy to sit and drink!
I just wanted to add that DD is cutting back on her nursing (and bottles at daycare) with her eating more solids. She was getting 3 4oz bottles and she nurses in am, bedtime and once over night. She is in daycare 3 days a week and I have roughly the same schedule whether home or not in terms of feedings. She is showing less interest in the late (4pm) bottle and so I've started making it 3oz so she is down to 11 oz and I think I'm going to keep decreasing it and replacing that bottle with solids.
I would think that 4oz is a bit low and could be related to the transition etc. Does he eat the same # of times (I know it is hard to compare) when you are nursing at home?
Same thing here. Pedi wasnt overly concerned. She also said that baby was growing, wet, dirty diapers, etc. I'd give it a little more time.
