How did you wait after belly button stump fell off did you wait to give LO their first bath?  Stump fell off today and there's a little moist spot that looks like it still needs to dry up...

Re: first bath

  • I waited another week or so.  I wanted to be sure it was healed.

  • Wait till everything is dry and looks like normal skin.
  • My doc said it could get wet from day one so we started baths right away and didn't give her stump a second thought. It fell off within the first week anyway.

  • The day it fell out we gave her a "real" bath.  I was just carefull about not getting the little piece that was left caught on anything.  It fell off eventually.

This. I'm in Canada, but with both of my kids, the nurse actually gave them a bath in the hospital and showed me how to do it.  They just told me to keep it clean and not to touch it directly. I gave DD several baths before it finally fell off.

  • I gave him a sponge bath the first few days he was home. But his stump fell off within a week of him being home. So I gave him his first bath in his tub right after that.

  • The nurses/peds at the hospital that DS was born at said that we didn't have to worry about the stump from the umbilical cord.  A nurse gave DS his first bath in my hospital room, and he was in water up to his neck.  We continued giving him baths like the nurse showed us.  We didn't have any issues, and DS's stump fell off at 1w6d.

The only babies that we were told needed sponge baths for the first 1-2 weeks were boys who were circumsized.

  • I only gave him sponge baths until I got the clear from my pediatrician.  his stump fell off, but there was still a little bit attached down in the belly button.  The nurse said to keep using the alcohol wipes to keep everything dry and continue with the sponge baths until his next appt when the doc could check it out.
