Cloth Diapering

Pockets questions...

Hi all, I've commented a few times, but this is my first time with an actual question :)

I use prefolds mainly, but since LO (2 months) is no longer pooping all the time and sleeps through her night feeds, I've started using pockets at night in order to change her less at keep her dry. I have some old-school small FBs and a BG 3.0 (I think that's what it is - all from craigslist).

I noticed that sometimes LO has red, dimpled skin afterward. Is this from texture fo the fleece liner or could it be a sensitivity?

Second question is for those who layer hemp/bamboo with microfiber. Do you wrap the natural fiber around the microfiber or do you stack them? Does anyone use a prefold instead of microfiber? I'm finding myself less than impressed with the absorbency of the microfiber.

FWIW, LO is going about an 8 hour period at night between changes. Maybe that's just too long? I hate to wake her unnecessarily...

Re: Pockets questions...

  • Does the red, dimpled texture to her skin go away when you're changing her more often?  I think that it's just from the pressure and moisture of the fleece liner.  My son always wakes up with pressure lines that go away.  I don't change him during the night.  I just feed him and put him right back to bed before he's fully awake or he'll wake up and want to be held until he truly passes out.  I'm just going to start adding extra inserts to his pockets at night so that there are no leaks because he is a heavy wetter at night.  I was using AI2s and they kept leaking.

  • Yeah, I'd imagine it's pressure marks.  Being wet can do that, especially at night when LO is in the same diaper all night.

I use hemp.  I just put 2 inserts in his pocket, and he's good all night.  Microfiber is good during the day when you're changing them every few hours anyway, but I prefer hemp for night.  I haven't ever stuffed a prefold in, so I don't know if it'd be more absorbant than microfiber (although I know it'd be fluffier).

  • If the redness goes away during the day, I wouldn't worry about it.

Microfiber stopped being sufficient enough for overnight pretty quickly with DD. I stuff her overnight pockets with a Flip organic insert (basically a prefold) and a Babykicks hemp insert. The cotton goes on top, hemp on the bottom.

DD is in her overnight diaper for ~12 hours. There is no way I would change her in the middle of the night (unless she poops, but the last time we had a nighttime poop was when we traveled across 8 time zones). She would never get back to sleep.

  • The red skin could be just from being in a PUL diaper for that long.  The dimpling is probably just marks from the diaper itself.  If neither hangs around or seem problematic, I wouldn't really worry too much.  We used to use pockets overnight and after 12+ hours in them DD's bottom would be pretty red.  Once we switched to fitteds and wool covers overnight she was never red again.  I think the air circulation is really what her skin needed for so many hours.  Don't wake your LO to be changed, just play around with your overnight diaper to find something that works best for her.

When I used MF in pockets, I stacked it with a hemp/bamboo insert underneath.  Now I just use bamboo and hemp inserts in pockets, I like it much better.

  • Thanks everyone!

The redness does go away, so I guess it's not something to worry about. I'm going to  ditch the microfiber and try a hemp/bamboo combo tonight.

    Fingers crossed!
