CD'ing Twins?

Hi Ladies,

I've lurked for a while, read the FAQ's but am still struggling to set up my stash for my twin boys due in January.  I'm not sure if I need to literally double the suggested quantities or if I can get by with a little less.

We are looking to use prefolds and the Bummis Super Snap wraps until at least 15 lbs. (wrap size wise) if not longer.

I'd love to only wash every other day, but am not sure if my 'numbers' are correct...

I was thinking of getting the following:

36 - 42 newborn prefolds (4 - 9lbs.) - thinking they might be in them long but it would give me 18 - 21 per day per baby, but they could also be used as doublers at night when they move up a size

8 newborn wraps

60 - 72 infant prefolds (7 - 15 lbs.)

8 small wraps

... and 6 Snappis

Any insight or help (esp. from anyone with multiples or more than one child in CD) as to my quantities or approach would be greatly appreciated!!  TIA!

  • I will suggest getting some Green Mountain Diapers/Clotheez Size Small Birds Eye Flats. These can be folded to fit a NB or S wrap and can be used as doublers later. I got the Large flats for my DS when he was in the Wide Baby prefolds... I'm so glad I did because he was out of the Wide Baby size within a couple months, but six months later I can still use the flats! They are a bit cheaper than prefolds and dry faster than prefolds. I will also suggest getting the Thirsties Duo wraps, as you can go from NB to S with the Size 1, although if you do this make sure you get more like 10 to have in rotation. Oh and a few fitted diapers would be helpful too. The NB Workhorse from GMD are only $5/each! And the rest have a bulk discount now... I'm really excited about that :)

Six snappies is a good number... I was always misplacing mine! That and they can break after awhile. They only have a six month life span or so. It's worth it to get two of the three packs and be good to go for awhile.

Feel free to ask me for more help at The Daily Cloth Diaper on Facebook :)

  • We have 36 pfs for our twins but thats just part of our stash -- we also have 36 KL0s and 2 doz or so BG XS AIOs.  We have so many because originally we were expecting triplets but I do like having the variety.  We go through roughly the standard 10-12 diapers a day per baby and that's a full diaper pail so while we're washing closer to every day we have a significant buffer to fold and put away.  For us, with a toddler in the house too and all the crazy (great but still crazy) that's come with having twins we're glad for our stash.

    WHERE"S ERNIEBUFFALO!??!?

The numbers look good to me, the infant prefolds would work on a little baby in a pinch, they'd just be huge on the babies. I would say you don't need six snappies...I only have one for my singleton and that's been just fine.

Ernie is a great resource, I'm sure she'll be along in a bit. She's CDed her twins from the start.

Ha, I was out of town. I can't speak to prefolds, as I used NB AIOs and then moved into OS pockets. I had 36 NB changes and washed every day. It worked fine. Honestly, washing EOD is difficult with twins, because you've basically got a full load of dirty diapers every single day. Now I have closer to 50 of our OS diapers, but I still run the wash every day. I just have enough cushion that I don't have to stuff the pockets every day if I don't feel like dealing with it. I will say, CDing twins is totally not as hard as I thought it would be. In fact, it's downright easy.
