  • Lots of people get tested and get false positives and sometimes it is the other way around. Try not to stress. Children living with Downs are some of the cutest, most lovable and amazing people. Some of my favourite people have Downs.

  • Call your office, and ask for the odds. Oftentimes, the tests come back with false positives; that is why we didn't get them done.

    Sending T's&P's!

Also, some punctuation/capitalization would be nice in your post. ;)

  • Did you do the NT scan too during 1st tri or just the blood work? I guess I'm confused on how they could say one twin could possibly have it but not the other one based on just a blood test. I would think the odds would be for both.

If they are fraternal then they are like any other brother or sister and only one could have DS.  If they are identical, they would both have DS if one of them in fact does.

I think she means that you cannot differentiate between the babies based on a blood test on mom.  With an NT scan, the separate measurements would give you a sense of likelihood for each twin - with bloodwork, you just have a general overall probability from mom's blood.

OP, definitely ask for probabilities and spend some time with your doctor getting an understanding of what's going on.  Best of luck and prayers for you and your LOs.

  • I think you need more information.  I am not sure what they are basing the whole "might have downs" thing on.  I wouldn't freak out yet, though.  I've known many people who have had these "might have" scary cases and it turns out the baby is healthy. Also, I work with kids who have down syndrome and I love them all so much-it's a very serious developmental disability that takes a great deal of care, but you will find a tremendous amount of support from other parents who are in similar situations, I am sure and your child could still be a very delightful and fairly independent person.

  • Sorry to hear you are going through that :-( I am currently going through a similar situation, go in for a level II ultrasound on Monday because my bloodwork didn't come back so great either. I have done a TON of research and have been speaking to a lot of friends and such that have gone through similar situations. What I have learned so far is that the quad screen bloodwork has a HUGE amount of false positive cases. All it does is screen, not diagnois. It also depends upon when you got your bloodwork done -- it is the "most accurate" (I say this with quotes because it still isn't very accurate) when done between 16-18 weeks. If you are out of that spectrum, that right there could be throwing the test off. Did they find any markers for DS on your ultrasound? Or are they just strictly going off the blood test? Try not to worry (easier said than done!) because there has been so many people in your position that have happy, healthy children. And keep in mind too that in the end, God doesn't make mistakes either -- you will love and cherish your little one regardless :-) Hope this helps.

    All of this.

I'm sorry that you're going through this and stressing about it, but without further testing, this really could just be a false high risk/positive.

  • Do your best not to stress to much, false positives are common...like PP's have said.

I've worked one on one with special needs children.  Children with downs are some of the most loving, patient, and amazing people out there who only see the good and amazing things in life.

Either way my thoughts and prayers are with you.
