Natural Birth

Music rec.

Hey all!

Im looking for a good playlist of relaxing music. Preferably with no singing just the music to bring into the labor and delivery room with us to help keep me relaxed.

Thanks!! :)

  • That's a not a one-size fits all order :)  What sort of music do you usually listen to?

  • If you have an iPhone or android, there is an app called 8tracks and it's awesome. You can find entire playlists that other users have created and tagged appropriately. I was going to make my own playlist but now I plan to use this app because if I need more energetic or more relaxed, lyrics or no lyrics, i have options!

  • I like to use 2 or 3 different playlists.  You never know what mood will strike you as you labor.  I like one list with mellow/ambient, one with a nice slow groove, and one that will make you want to move and dance.  For me, Florence is great for the later, Enya would be good for the slow groove.

Based on those few examples, I'd suggest something like:

    (with vocals) :

    Kate Bush

    Esben and the Witch

    Cocteau Twins

    Ellie Goulding

    Loreena McKennitt

Sia (particularly songs on Colour the Small One)

    (minimal vocals) :

    Enigma

    (instrumental):

David Arkenstone (particularly Call of the Sea)

    Nightnoise

    Kitaro

    Secret Garden

    Taliesin Orchestra

  • Thank you sooo much! This helps a lot :)

  • This is a screenshot (because a list would make for a pretty long post) of my labour playlist. I know you said no vocals, but Vois Sur Ton Chemin and La Nuit are in French - I'm guessing you don't want vocals because they'd be distracting, but when you can't understand the language you don't really notice them. Well, I say that, but I studied French for 12 years and happen to know those songs by heart, and still found them relaxing but not distracting.

Latika's Theme from Slumdog Millionaire is actually the only song on my playlist with absolutely no vocals, and is insanely relaxing. Kindle My Heart is another one like that. It has vocals, but they're pretty minimal and even then, very quiet.

Both Death Cab For Cutie songs were great: Brothers on a Hotel Bed is relaxing, and We Looked LIke Giants is great to help you focus your breathing, for reasons Death Cab fans might know ;)

Other than that all my songs were my personal favourites. You Had Me From Hello was the song DH and I danced to at our wedding, and I hadn't heard it since then - I didn't even listen to it when I was putting the playlist together - and it was SO nice to hear it again for the first time in labour. Vocals or not, just put in songs that mean a lot to you, or remind you of happy times, and you can't go wrong.
    Good luck!
