Hi everyone,
A while back I asked for advice regarding how to be sure new baby will be covered on insurance. Many of you told me that I will have 30 days to call and get baby covered, but most of you told me to call my school's HR department to double check. I did call and that was great advice and very accurate, so thanks! My Director of benefits told me to call insurance company "just in case---to be sure she was giving me right info"---translate, I really can't answer your question and even though I should know or be the one to call, you do it." When you get one of those, you say ugh oh...I better call.
I have pretty decent insurance---typically no prior approvals needed, no referrals needed, etc. When I called I was shocked to find out that the insurance company was to be notified at 3 months along in pregnancy of the pregnancy and that a file needed to be set up with "Medical Management." With this ALL done, ALL would be covered. If it wasn't previously set up we would have a $250 deductible. And more news for me....I am responsible (or my husband) for calling within 2 buisness days of baby's birth to notify them of the birth. If not, there would be an additional deductible of between $250 and $500 for baby depending on which nursery baby is in.
I was informed that I was given 4 days stay with a c-section. If either baby or myself needs longer, we need to call to get authorization or it will not be covered.
So----while I don't know that all insurance companies run the same, you might want to call yours to just double check so there are no unnecessary surprises in the end!

This is Aetna's current policy and their policy with the law change. The new changes do not come into effect until your plan's renewal. My renewal isn't until March 30th of next year, so I have to get my own pump.
