April 2012 Moms

Oh crap my milk tastes like soap.

Sh!t. I guess I have a lipase issue.

I have tasted my milk before and it tastes fine (delicious, actually!) but right now I just took a sip of milk that's a couple days ago and it smells and tastes like soap. No wonder Violet refuses the bottle half the time.

Does this mean my entire ginormous freezer stash is ruined!? And what do I do? Scald the milk? Oh gosh. This is sad. I also just had two glasses of wine and now I think I need to breastfeed if all my milk is bad! Eeeeeekkkkk!!!!!!!

  • If it has been fine in the past I wouldn't assume it all bad. Maybe take a random sample of your stash?

Yea I guess I can just taste each individual bag as I defrost it?

ETA- I just defrosted a bag and it tastes fine. So I guess it's hit or miss?

  • i would thaw a few random bags and see what they smell like.

I learned about this at the end of June and was so mad. All of mine was nasty and smelled metallic like pennies.

For me, it's only in my frozen/thawed milk, not fresh

I have been scalding everything for about a month now, it's annoying but worth it.

If yours is all lipased, you can save it to mix with babyfood and some babies will drink it (it's not harmful just smells gross). My LO would not

I do not have any experience with lipase but the nanny said D refused one bottle the other day. She dumped the milk and she did fine with the other bottles. My conclusion = breastmilk can be weird.

I'm glad the next bag was fine!

  • Oh no! Glad to have read your update about some of it being ok. I hope it was just the one bad batch.

  • whew glad to hear the bag you thawed is ok. i would try random bags still.

i've also read you can mix it with fresh but i was afraid of wasting more

  • Things that you eat can affect the taste.  Maybe that was the problem?

  • I had this same issue this week. I couldn't tell if MH just didn't clean the bottles/parts well enough, or if it was a lipase issue. I now smell each batch that I pump and haven't noticed the smell continuing. Hopefully it was just a fluke for you!
