Hi everyone,
Just came across this board today although I'm no stranger to the knot/bump boards (see siggy).
DS has been an overall unhappy baby since birth. I know all babies cry, but he seemed to cry ALL.THE.TIME. if he wasn't sleeping or eating. Things have progressively gotten worse since he was born, even though we went from breastmilk to Enfamil Infant to Enfamil Gentlease to Enfamil Nutramigen to (now) Similac Elecare.
He was super super super gassy, and at two weeks the doctor put him on Zantac thinking that he may have silent reflux (??--not something we agreed with, but ok). He now has so many reflux symptoms that we jokingly wonder if starting him on the Zantac was like a self-fulfilling prophecy. He still cries and screams as if he's being tortured so we went BACK to the doctor again this week to have him seen. Even though he was already on the Nutramigen (as a "just in case"--he'd had his poop tested before starting it and it came back negative for blood but was so unhappy the pedi thought it'd be a good idea for him to be on it anyway) for a couple weeks, his poop came back positive. More positive than the pediatrician said she'd seen a test come back in awhile. So off the Nutramigen we went, and now on to Elecare. We also upped his Zantac dose...he's getting 1.25ml 3x/day (he weighs 12 pounds 9 ounces as of Tuesday).
This is his third day on it, and yesterday was AWFUL. I'm pretty used to crying right along with DS now, but I couldn't take it yesterday. He was SO super upset, screaming, arching, spitting up all over everywhere...He hasn't pooped in two days since switching formulas which is not like him at all...I know there is an adjustment period to this formula, I am just hoping he adjusts FAST. I called and spoke to the doctor again yesterday and today we set up an appointment with a GI nurse practitioner because the doctors are booked out until January (hoping our pediatrician's office can work it out to where he gets seen sooner) but oh my gosh I am going to end up in an insane asylum. I feel so so so bad for DS and even though we are doing everything we think we can, I can't help him!!
Has anyone else gone down a similar path, and if so what did you end up finding out was the problem? Everyone keeps telling me it will get better...I just have a hard time seeing that light at the end of the tunnel we are in.
Re: Introduction
Hello there,
I have seen some of your posts before on other boards talking about your LO and "colicky" behaviors. I can tell you that you are not alone. My son has been pretty much miserable since birth as well. The day after he was born we had to tell family and friends not to come visit at the hospital because he was screaming so much; and the nurses kept saying that he was hungry and to put him back on the boob-what a joke!
He is now almost 4 months and just when I thought zantac was going to be our life saver his reflux symptoms are back and his pedi doesn't want to give him any other meds and said that his dosage is adequate (he takes 0.7 ml 2Xday and he is at least 14 lbs), which I disagree with. Now onto finding another pedi...
To me, the worst part is not knowing if he is unconfortable because of the reflux or because of MPI (which I am not even sure he is) and the sleepless days and nights.
All I can tell you is that the handfull of good weeks we've had have been amazing. When he is feeling good and wakes up in the morning and gives me a big smile I forget about the fact that I've been up all night. Hang in there
Zantac isn't the best choice for reflux. If its not helping I would get Prilosec or Prevacid and see if that helps.
He will be 8 weeks on Tuesday. I've heard from more than one doctor that Zantac is the best reflux med for babies his age, and that Prevacid for example works best in older babies. I know it's been mentioned as an option and if by next week's appointment his reflux symptoms are still bad we will be discussing switching because really what's the point in keeping him on something that doesn't seem to be working well anyway? So we will see!

I learned though after months of similar issues. Reflux can ONLY be diagnosed using an upper and lower gi scope and nothing else. I would suggest skipping his ped and going to a GI specialist at your local children's hospital because only THEY will have the inner knowledge to follow your child and really know what to do!
DD2 was also super gassy and miserable as a newborn. She was either eating, sleeping, or crying/uncomfortable. She has MSPI and terrible silent reflux. Hopefully the Elecare will help your LO if he has a dairy/soy sensitivity. DD2 started on Zantac at around 2 wks of age. We gave it two weeks, but it wasn't doing the trick, so we switched to Prilosec. She was on Prilosec for a couple months, but would still spit up any time she was flat on her back, so the pedi switched her to Prevacid. That finally did the trick. I would definitely push for another reflux med. Zantac doesn't always work, and you're right, there's no use in keeping LO on a med that doesn't work for him.
I hope you get some answers at your GI appt and that your LO and you get some relief soon!
