December 2010 Moms

So, does anyone like their IUD?

I went to the OB today and she asked if I wanted to stay on the minipill.  I told her about my pregnancy freakout a couple weeks ago and said I just can't handle remembering the pill and worrying about being a couple days late.  So, she suggested Mirena since I've had good success on progesterone only pills already.  I know a few people have had theirs removed but does anyone like it?  I'd wanted to do Implanon but they don't offer them and no one around does apparently.  So, my alternate is Nuvaring at about $40/month compared to Mirena which would be 100% covered.

    LOL!

I have no experience with IUDs, but if you have questions about NuvaRing or OrthoEvra, I've used both of those.

  • Loved it! I had it in for 15 months and it was great!!! Once removed, I had one annovulatory cycle and then on the next cycle, I was pregnant. I will be getting it in again after this baby. I would recommend it to anyone. edit: spelling
Proud Momma to two beautiful children!!!

  • I have only used the nuvaring, but I had great success with it.  I'm too much of a chicken for an IUD.

Ha ha!  I was beginning to think the crickets chirping the background was my answer!  I was on the Nuvaring before and liked it actually.  She gave me a couple today to get my cycle back to being regular.  In the meantime, they pre-certified me for the Mirena.  When the insurance person from my OB called though she actually said it is covered 100% because of Obamacare (she actually used that term too!).  I'd have to pay about $40/month for the Nuvaring.

Thanks for the responses ladies and Linds, glad you had a good experience!

Lol I thought more Dec mama's were using the IUD post baby.  I work in the ER so I typically see more of the complications/concerns rather than happy iud stories so I have no idea.  I used nuvaring for a few years and really liked it (although not the price tag since my insurance doesn't cover birth control), however I was considering IUD for after #2 and Bfing, but we'll see.

  • I have a love/hate relationship with mine...

Good? My period is like 2 days of spotting and that's it! I'm not overly hormonal and crazy like I was on BCP. I don't have to think about my BC.

Bad? My strings fell off, had to have an u/s to check its position, and I don't know how they'll get it out now! I also have horrible O pain/back pain for like 4-5 days around O time. I hate it!!!!!

  • I have Paragard and for the most part, I like it.

I have super duper heavy periods with it and that sucks.

  • I hated it at first since it took about 4 months for the spotting to stop.  But that was 12 weeks PP, so maybe it was a little of that too.

Now I love it.  Took a few months for my period to become regular, but it is super light and no pill to worry about.

I did have some more cramping the first few months, but once again, I'm not sure how much was PP and how much was IUD.

    I have Mirena.

  • Cool, thank you all for your responses.  I think I'll give it a go, particularly since it's basically free for me compared to the $2400 I'd spend for Nuvaring over the next five years.  I can always go back if it doesn't work well.

  • I have Mirena and love it.  It was suggested by my general practitioner to treat the extremely heavy periods that I had after having DD.

I have some weird cramping at times, but other than that it's been great

  • I had mirena for a bit and loved it for the most part.

The good: pretty much nonexistent periods

The bed: It made me break out bad (pretty uncommon side effect) and the cramps were not fun although they were very short lived

    I now have paraguard.

The good: No hormones so no hormonal side effects

The bad: my periods are much heavier than I have ever had (I only ever used regular and lite tampons in the past).
