Have any of you successfully increased the nap time for your LO? How? Please do share!!
My guy 8 1/2 mths STTN about 11 hours and used to do 3 to 4 naps a day longest nap at 9ish 12/1 ish, but this past week or so he's suddenly waking after the 30 min mark every time. We have nothing in the crib and he goes to sleep on his own no problem, so we've never introduced a lovie or a blanket of sorts.
He wakes early for the day, at 5ish, so usually has to take a quick 30 min nap at 6:30/7 to then make it to his 9/9:30 nap. When I keep him up and skip that early nap, he still doesn't seem to sleep longer for the 9/9:30 nap. I just don't know what to do! He gets tired at the two hour mark ALWAYS and yet in the late afternoon 3 pm he often will not be able to take a last 30 min nap to make it through the rest of the day, even though he's clearly tired. He fights that nap now I think too wired up from the day.
My thinking is if I could get him to elongate both the 9 and 1 nap, then he'd make it fine til the end of the day, w/o needing that last cat nap. But how?!?
And now for the past two nights he's woken at 4:00 and 3:20 am unable to put himself back to sleep then too! I'm afraid it's spreading!!
Ideas? Experience?
Re: Elongating naps: Help!
Some people have success using the technique where you go into their room 10 min before they would normally wake (so at 20 min for you) and you either stay right there and try to resettle them when they do wake, or you actually gently wake them, then immediately soothe them back down. It worked for me only once (my son naps for 45 min on the nose typically), but I stopped trying after I had a bunch of failures in a row one week...I've been thinking of giving it another try since he also fights and often missed his last nap of the day, then is up waaaaay too long and is way cranky before bedtime.
If you google "nap extensions" you should get some good results with various methods. Good luck
