Food Allergy

Please help me figure out our issues

LO is 4 weeks and is now EBF. He had to have a few ounces of formula when he was born bc of uneducated hospital pediatrician insisting he was dehydrated. No lady, he's 2 days old and BF, he won't be soaking diapers every 3-4 hours. I asked about doing hypoallergenic formula bc DS1 had allergies to dairy, soy, peanuts, tree nuts  and I didn't want to start DS2 with regular formula bc of horrible family history (DH and I both have bad allergies ). LO started with the spitting up and colicky symptoms literally within minutes of having regular formula.

Well, I've had some issues w oversupply and that seems to be getting better. However, lo has the stinkiest poop ever with mucous and he's super gassy. I've already eliminated dairy about 2 weeks ago. He also spits up acid and arches his back in pain after feelings, so I know that he has AR like his big brother. But what is with the stinky, nasty poop? Even w all the allergies, DS1 never had poop like this. Any suggestions? I am taking him to our regular pedi on friday and want an action plan lol

  • Also, the poop has been a yellowish green to hunter green. Since starting to correct the oversupply, the poo is going more yellow, but just as stinky. Also has really runny poop

  • DD2 started out with normal poop, but it turned green when she was about 2 wks old. It became really mucousy and sometimes had specks of blood in it. She was also insanely gassy and would grunt a lot and was just miserable. Once I was dairy and soy free for about 5 wks, her poop went back to normal. And her other symptoms subsided as well. She is now the happiest baby I've ever seen. I also started out with an oversupply and that can mimic MSPI. So I started by block feeding to get my supply under control. However, that didn't fix DD2's problems, so then I changed my diet and that did the trick.

DD2 also has terrible reflux. We tried Zantac, then Prilosec, and now she's on Prevacid, which works well for her.

It takes time for dairy to clear your systems. I'd give it 2 more weeks and then cut soy too, if he's not better.

  • Ditto PP - I would cut out soy in addition to dairy, and see if that doesn't clear things up. GL!

  • We had a horrible time trying to find what was wrong with our DD, she was in the NICU to begin with and was so little that she would get tired when she would try to BF so I pumped for a month and fed her formula. I knew something was not right when she had the stinkyist gas in the world and was having green BM's. We tried about 6 types of formula and she finally had a BM that was white with blood in it and found out that she has a milk protein allergy and now is on Similac Alimentum. We thought she had AR like her big brother but she was arching her back because she was in so much pain from the gas and spitting up because she caould not process the formula. She has been on the Alimentum since April of this year and has spit-up once since then and has been gaining weight like a champ. My Pedi told me that for some babies eliminating dairy from your diet just is not enough. Good luck!!
