foods for LO to hold and eat

Anyone have any ideas on what kinds of foods or snacks i can give DS to hold on to and bite off of. While i'm cutting foods up for him he just wants to grab the big piece and hold it himself.  I've tried sweet potato fries, veggie straws, but everything else i'm worried he will bite off too big of a chunk and choke. Thanks!!

  • I give Josh some cheese or he really likes when I cut the skin off the apple and just give him the whole apple.  He always takes the right size bite for him.

  • I give ds large chunks (about 2 inches) of water melon and honey dew along with other fruits and veggies. We also give him crackers and cookies and I make my own chicken nuggets... I make grilled cheese and PB &J sandwiches... Hmm what else? He loves asparagus. I guess I give him whatever we are eating. I give him big chunks and he bites off tiny pieces... I have taken several CPR classes through out the years, so I feel prepared incase he chokes (prob not emotionally though) I also give him cheerios and goldfish.

His favorite meals are the ones that he can feed himself, so I try to let him feed himself as much as possible.  Gerber graduates makes little ravioli in their line called "pick ups."  My DS hates pasta for some reason so he didn't care for these, but you could try it. GL

  • We do melons, toast, cheese sticks, and cooked carrots. DD can hold them pretty well, occasionally she will try to put too much in her mouth, and I have to correct her, but she does that with almost anything she eats at this stage!
  • Grilled cheese - that usually keeps him occupied because he takes it apart. Otherwise, toast works pretty well. Cheese (slices torn up), watermelon, and those Gerber ravioli someone else mentioned. (I personally find them disgusting, and only keep them on hand out of convenience.)

He does tend to shove things in his mouth, so I don't go far in case I need to do a finger swipe and get it out of his mouth.

DS doesn't have any teeth, so we're a little limited.

  • Soft fruit like banana, cantaloupe, mango, watermelon, peach/pear (when they're very ripe). Blueberries, grapes or strawberries, I cut in 2 or 4 pieces.

Breadsticks are a huge hit over here, and so are those fruit pouches. Problem is DD will suck them dry in about 3.5 seconds. lol

  • Waffle, toast, grilled cheese, & cheese quesadillas are all great to cut into strips.  (Use a pizza cutter to make it easier!)
