Connor's early birth story and PIP

Hey ladies! Sorry it has taken me so long to get around to posting this. Surprisingly, I've been really busy while here at the hospital. As my husband said "telling people you've had a baby is a lot of work."

Anyways, I apologize in advance that this will be long. Feel free to just skip down to the photo reward at the end  Smile  So Saturday evening I ate dinner and was laying on the couch when I felt a gush in my pants. It felt like more than discharge so I got up and checked it in the bathroom. I found that it had soaked through my underwear and pants. It was clear, liquidy and had no odor. I immediately called the OB's office and the on-call doctor told me to come in and get checked out.

At this point I was almost hysterical. I called my husband (who had basically just left the house) and told him I thought my water had broken. At the triage in L&D the did tests to determine if it was in fact amniotic fluid. They told me they needed 2 out of 3 tests to confirm it. I basically had a .5 out of 3. They had me walk around with a pad for an hour and see if it would happen again so they could check it. Well, shortly after walking I had another large gush and it was confirmed.

I was admitted Saturday night at 34w2d. I was 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced. They said if it would've happened before 34w, they would try to stop labor or admit me on bed rest. After 34w they think the risk of infection outweighs any developmental delays the baby would have. They gave me an insert suppository called Cervadil (I think) that was supposed to loosen my cervix and get me ready for labor. It was supposed to stay in 12 hours. It fell out Saturday morning around 8, which was only 9 hours after it was put in. They decided it was fine and went ahead and started Pitocin at 9:30.

After that, I was having contractions (according to the monitor), but I couldn't feel them until about 2 p.m. They gradually got more intense until about 6:30 p.m. when I asked for the epidural. At that point I was 3cm and 90% effaced.  The epidural was great and I was able to get a nap. Labor gradually progressed until I was finally dilated to a 10 around 1:30 a.m. At this point they finally had me start pushing.

Connor James finally made his appearance at 3:29 a.m. He came out crying, which was a huge relief since he was so early. They laid him on my stomach (on a blanket) while they cleaned him up. Then they whisked him over to the area where 3 NICU workers (doc, nurse and a tech) worked to measure, weigh and assess him. This is when my husband took the picture below. They brought him over to my head and allowed me to say hello for a minute before they took him to the NICU. He weighed 6lb 2oz and measured 19 3/4 inches.

He is beautiful with a full head of dark hair on his perfect little conehead Smile He has dark blue eyes and I'm obviously completely in love. Also, he is doing really great. He is breathing great and not on any oxygen. They had him under a warmer (not an incubator type, think almost like a warmer light over the bassinet) for half of the day Monday, but then he was moved to a regular bassinet where he has stayed. The big thing, and what will get him sprung from that joint, is eating. He has a feeding tube, but they are still encouraging him to try and learn how to breastfeed. So he will latch on to me and suck for a little while but gets tuckered out fast. I get discharged tomorrow and I'm hoping that he will get to come home in about a week. They will not give me a date yet, so this is just my hopeful and hopefully realistic goal for him.

And finally, here is my little guy. This was just minutes after he was born and before they took him to the NICU. He has his dad's chin and nose and my chubby cheeks.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers this weekend! I cannot tell you how much it helped me get through this weekend and my overwhelming fear and concern of having him to early. You girls are awesome!

  • Oh gosh he is just precious. :) He looks full term. Good job baking him fast since he clearly needed it. :)

Thanks for posting your birth story and the lovely picture. So glad you are both doing so well! I hope he figures out food quickly and can come home to you. Wil l you be able to stay at the NICU while he is there, or will there be a lot of back and forth for the next week?

    Lots of luck and hugs!

I get discharged tomorrow, but he will still be here. Ugh it breaks my heart Crying

ETA: Sorry this posted too quickly! I will be coming back likely several times a day. He feeds every 3 hours and it seems like he is awake and more alert at about every other feeding, so my plan is to come back for those feedings (ex: 6 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. or 9 a.m., 3 p.m and 9 p.m). The NICU is open to me 24/7 and encourage me to come whenever, which is great.
