Blackout curtains for naptime?

DS has been having a tough time falling asleep as naptime (he definitely still needs the nap).  Does anyone know if blackout curtains really make a difference?  His room faces west and is pretty bright with just the curtains closed.  I'd just hate to spend the money on shades or curtains and have it make no difference in how easy it is for him to fall asleep at naptime.

  • Yes!! DS's room is pretty much as dark as it is at night time.

  • We have linen cotton curtains from Restoration Hardware Baby & Child with black-out lining. They make DD's room pitch black during the day, when they are closed.  I would totally recommend them.

  • Our house came with blackout shades and honestly, I'm not sure how much they help DD. She either naps well or doesn't and the shade's always down at naptime.  They're awesome for me and DH though lol.

Should clarify - her room in our old place didn't have the shades, just miniblinds and her nap habits were pretty much the same.

Could you hang up a dark sheet for a few days and see if it helps and then invest in some curtains?

This is a great idea!  I'm definitely doing this :)  Thanks!

I did that too.  I still don't really know if it helps to be honest.  I think I just told myself it did because I was desperate :)  I think it helps even more for the light summer mornings and evenings though.

I ended up just buying a cheap curtain rod and cheap black curtains from Walmart and mounting them behind his actual nice non-blackout curtains.  It only cost me about $12.  They do make the room darker, and they are completely hidden at all times.

Check out your local fabric store. I bought blackout material at Joann Fabric using a 50% off coupon. There is no sewing involved, just buy curtain rings with clips.

  • If you don't want to spend a lot Home Depot carries those blackout roll shades and they will cut them to your window size.
  • We had the exact same problem.

We got blackout shades and it did the trick.  You can still see a tiny amount of light around the edges, but if you have dark curtains it should do the trick.  It seriously worked miracles for us.  DS never slept in his crib before we got them.

I was also going to recommended this. My stepmom sewed some for DS's room and she put them on a tension rod. They definitely have helped DS.

  • Never had them and never needed them. From day one he has slept and napped I his crib. His room is light. We have white curtains over white plantation blinds. I don't know if it is just what he is used to or if it is just because my kid can literally sleep anywhere. He takes after his mom and loves to sleep and sleeps hard.
