Babies: 6 - 9 Months

scared to do finger foods

Can you mommas help me out.  We're having a tough time getting through the texture of outmeal/fruit mixtures of the 2nd stage Gerber foods.

We waited to start any sort of purees until LO was 6 months old (so I feel really behind with all of this).  LO like I said is having problems with textures... gagging and throwing up everything he's just eaten.

Just yesterday we started with little tiny pieces of bannanas... he ate a few and then started gagging again.

What were/are the first finger foods that you tried.  How did you serve them?  How did LO handle taking them... and when did they get a good feeling that they can start feeding it to themselves?

Re: scared to do finger foods

  • I have been doing finger foods for about a month, I use big pieces that DD can hold onto and experiment with. Some examples, strips of french toast, whole bananas, watermelon, long green beans, strips of sweet potato, muffins, etc.  We are doing a combo of BLW and purees, hence the early finger foods.  DD often gags, but never chokes and there is definatly a difference.

  • I started solids at 5 months with purees, so he's probably ahead of yours.  When I started with more chunky food, I kept most of it s pur?e and let some of it stay chunky (we make our own baby food).  When he insisted on stealing the spoon, I started scooping some of his food onto his tray to practice grabbing it.  He just made a mess at first, but eventually he put some in his mouth.  We're still on soft food like bananas and baked squash, but he's capable of feeding himself ( although it's still a messy process).

I'd suggest offering your LO soft foods that he can grab easily and suck out of his hand.  Gagging is scary, but it's part of the learning process.  Don't put too much food on his tray so he doesn't try to shove a ton of food in all at once, and if he does gag, try not to overreact.  Keep feeding time fun and let him explore with the food how to grab and eat it.

  • DD is pretty good with finger foods now meaning she can get them to her mouth and is actually chewing some now.  It took a while to get there (we started with purees at 5.5 months) and she still gags every once in a while, but gagging is ok.  First finger foods were bananas, avocados, little pieces of really soft apples and carrots that I steamed and puffs.  Now she eats pretty much whatever we eat as long as it's nothing hard, just cut into small pieces.

  • I started buying the Gerber strawberry apple puffs and breaking them into smaller pieces and feeding them to her at 6 months. They dissolve very fast. Once she started "chewing" and mashing with her gums I started giving her the whole puff. Now I just put a few on her tray and she can pick them up and feed herself. We also put teething cookies in her mesh like feeding device (not sure what it's called) because we were afraid she would choke since those cookies tend to break off in large chunks
