Breakfast Ideas for Hypoallergic Diet

My son is only allowed fruits and veggies for the next 4 weeks. I think breakfast will be the hardest to figure out what to give him. Please give me your breakfast ideas!!!

He's not allowed protein, dairy, soy, whey.

Thanks so much!!!

  • Can he have oatmeal? You could mash some banana in it for some flavor. Why is he only allowed fruits and veggies for a month? That sounds pretty dangerous. He needs protein, carbs, and fats too...If your dr recommended this diet, they also need to refer you to a dietitian for guidelines of what to feed him to make sure he's getting the nutrients he needs.

  • No oatmeal allowed. Yes his GI doctor recommended it. They found food allergy cells in his colon and he has acute colitis. They want to start from scratch and see what he's allergic to. He'll have only elecare, fruits and veggies for 4 weeks. Then we can add breads, pasta's, rice.

I see. Have you seen a pediatric allergist to test for allergies?

  • We've see a few GI specialist, Immunologist/Allergy specialist, and Infectious disease specialist. He's had 2 colonoscopys and an endoscope.

Not sure why the immunologist didn't catch that he has any allergies. She did a million different blood and stool tests.

The GI specialist told me yesterday that my son has rewritten the GI Textbook.

  • Hmm, that's frustrating. You might do a post and share his story/symptoms. You might find someone else here who could offer some insight. This board runs the gamut from food intolerances, allergies, FPIES, to EOE/EOS. I hope you get some answers soon!

  • I guess the only thing that I am confused about regarding your situation is that fruits and veg are NOT hypoallergenic. No food is. You can absolutely have allergies to Frits and veg. Have they done skin allergy testing on him?

  • No they haven't done any skin allergy test. Can you determine food allergies from the skin test?

Yes, skin testing is commonly used for both environmental and food allergies. Both my DD's had both bloodwork and skin testing for allergies. I'm surprised the allergist you saw didn't do a skin test. They usually do skin and blood testing to compare/confirm the results.

Yes you can.  DD's Milk allergy was determined by a skin test.  We plan to go back at 12 months for more testing.

I'm just surprised that they let him continue with blood in his diaper from 4 months - 12 months.  That's crazy.  I really hope you find answers soon - I know this must be so frustrating and hard.

I also agree about veggies and fruits not being hypoallergenic.  Many people are allergic to strawberries, kiwi, carrots, apple... you can be allergic to ANYTHING.

ETA:  I just wanted to add that not all allergies actually show up on skin or blood testing.  So I don't want you to think we are saying this can all be resolved with a few skin pricks.

Also -- since you can only do fruits and veggies -- I would say bananas for breakfast.
