Is "pregnancy brain" real for you?

I really thought the whole "pregnancy brain" thing was just a myth - or a lame excuse.  But now I think I may be a believer.  I cannot focus on anything for more than about 10 minutes at a time - which really sucks since I have a 20 page paper due on Thursday that I've written 11 craptastic pages of.  And other due next week that I haven't even started. Indifferent

Re: Is "pregnancy brain" real for you?

  • YES. i can't remember anything anymore, and feel like i am in a fog half the time.

  • It was. I ramped up my Omega 3s and got much better ones and it went away.
  • Absolutely, though I recently read an article debunking the whole pregnancy brain myth...I still think it's hard to be growing a person inside of you and be preoccupied with all things baby and NOT be an airhead!
  • Yes! I keep a notepad with my - well, several: one in the car, one in my purse and one on my nightstand - and when I think of something I write it down. I check them all every couple hours....pathetic.
  • Dr. Oz told me that your brain shrinks 8% when you're pregnant. It's no myth. Dr. Oz is king.

  • It's definitely not a myth. There is scientific research out there that explains what causes "pregnancy brain." Specifically, the hippocampus in your brain is affected, so that is why our memory is all screwed up.

  • Oh its sooo not a myth.  I will be in the middle of speaking then cant remember what the heck we were talking about.  Its downright awful.  My sister jokes it gets worse after the baby.  Help us all if that be the case.
  • It can not possbily be a myth! I can not wait to get the other half of my brain back!!!! I can't remember anything lately

  • It's not a myth. Your brain actually shrinks from around 3-8%. Around 6 mos post-partum it goes back to its baseline size.

I don't have as much attention to detail lately in my work activities. And at home I switch stuff up sometimes too (put out the recycling bin instead of the trash bin on the wrong day)...

  • Not a myth!  I read something that said at least part of the reason is due to the baby taking all of the Omega 3's you have stored in your brain.  I started taking flaxseed oil and that seems to have helped some.  Of course it says to take it 3 times a day, but with baby brain I am lucky to remember it once a day!
  • There is no way this is a myth. I am getting more scattered as this baby grows. I could not remember my phone number the other day. I actually had to look it up on my phone.

  • Yes, and wait until you get to "mommy brain" - it's worse!

  • Kinda for me it's when I get tired. I was always like that when I get tired but now I'm tired more often.
  • Oh God - no myth here - if I dont write it down you can forget about it.  My poor boss - not only am I pregnant with pregnancy brain but his wife is pregnant with pregnancy brain - and Lord help her patients because she's a doctor....
  • It is not a myth! I have lost a lot of brain function. I put the phone in the fridge, put the milk back with no lid, and gave my 14 month a cup of milk with no lid all in one day. I need to start taking some of the omega 3's.
