Oh my dear sweet baby jesus I never thought having something be off limits would be so hard. I swear I dream of wine and can almost taste it in my sleep. It sucks so bad that I can't have it- what sucks more is my friend drinks a glass a night (she is 6 months preg) and was told by her midwife that its ok. I just can't do it. I don't even drink caffeine, no soda, no coffee, nothing. I know what I am doing is best for the baby- and plan to stick with it, but oh do I want to be one of the more care-free moms that are ok with wine, redbull, and even turkey sandwiches that havent been nuked in microwave.
I know this was not a question- just needed to rant a little.

Strangely, I don't crave wine I crave beer (I usually hate beer). So I take a few sips from DH's occassionally
A happy mom equals a happy baby. I don't deprive myself of anything.

I'm okay with turkey sandwiches and eat at least two a week (gasp! cold!) because my OB told me not to worry about it. They've found listeria more in cantaloupe (saw a story on that today) and salad mix (that was in the last month or so ago) and apple slices at McDonalds and Burger King (saw that one today too) than in turkey lately, from what I've read. Yeah, it can happen, but turkey sandwiches are certainly not the only listeria risk out there.
Lol, I for sure put raspberry flavored gingerale in a wine glass last night to have with dinner. My SO looked at me like I was nuts, but I just wanted to see if I could trick myself... I failed.
Everyone's comfort level is different. I think doing what make you most comfortable is the important thing. I stayed away from wine till about the mid point of my second trimester. I am just about to enter the 3rd and have one glass when out to dinner.
I also never bought the deli meat thing either....That is just my comfort level and, like I said, we are all different when it comes to that.
I've had maybe 3 beers this entire pregnancy and honestly, I just felt guilty the whole time drinking it
I was like I wonder if baby is feeling loopsy, not that I was haha. I just found it hard to enjoy each time.
I had one glass and was completely freaked out until I felt LO moving around a lot the next day. I just couldn't enjoy it.
That said, I will occasionally take a sip of DH's beer or wine. I don't want to drink the whole thing, but, especially with wine or craft beers, I do want to taste.
I definitely don't judge women who do drink a glass here and there. To each her own. I will probably drink red wine in late pregnancy as I've heard it can help with labor.

Exactly. People used to drink beer (albeit weak beer) instead of water because it was safer due to the beer-making process killing harmful bacteria. Some of the brightest minds in human history emerged during that time. Also, numerous studies have shown that light-to-moderate drinking has no adverse effects on the fetus nor the child years later (Denmark studies). Sigh. Maybe I can get over this hangup the further I progress. Some nights I'd just love a glass of wine to unwind.

Hear ye, hear ye! Read this and rejoice!

But seriously, they are now seeing (in very well executed and controlled studies) that light to moderate drinking in pregnancy poses no significant risks to baby, and in some cases may even result in higher IQ than in the kids of teetotalers. The reason countries would never say to pregnant women "go ahead and drinking moderation" is because some people would see that as a green light to binge. Overall, from a public health standpoint, blanket bans on drinking during pregnancy are much easier to promote.
So go ahead and have that glass of wine! Stop feeling guilty/like you have to be perfect/totally paranoid!
Agreed! I had cravings for Vodka of all thing so bad. An I smoked before I was pregnant and that still pops up every now and again. It sucks because my husband still smokes and says he can not quit. I dont know where my will power came frm, but I am glad I found it. Keep up the good work , and remember its only temporary
This is my plan. Just can't bring myself to drink alcohol. At all.
I had a glass of red wine poured at the wedding we went to last weekend. Thanks to M/S I couldn't drink it. With Z I had one half glass of champagne for NYE and one glass for christmas, that I lost while trying to get everyone served.
I probably won't drink again until the holidays if I do.
I had turkey unnuked this weekend. I need carbs to kick the M/S and sandwiches are amazing.
I agree with sadsadie! I had a glass of prosecco last week and it was delish.
PS - sadsadie I love your siggy about the birth plan - you & I sound alot alike :-)
Me too, totally agree! i treated myself to a glass of wine on our anniversary. im sure one glass is just fine
I have an occasional glass of wine... I had a few sips of my friend's prosecco the other night at dinner and it was sooo nice!
I also am a sandwich fiend - before I got pregnant sandwiches were pretty much my favorite food, and now I crave carbs even more. I avoided non-nuked meats in first tri, and much of second, now allow it once in a while. I agree with some of the other posters, moderation is the key for anything! Indulge once in a while if it strikes you, but I totally understand not being able to enjoy it, I get that way sometimes too.
Looking forward to having a couple drinks without a second thought in a few months!
Nice to find others who share my sentiments. :-)
If you all are going out to eat - be sure to ask your waiter about non-alcoholic options. I've found a lot of places that serve specialty cocktails will make virgin versions that are (almost) as good, and some have other great options... one place even had a special "Temperance Cocktail"! In addition to having a fun drink to keep you from feeling deprived, it's interesting to see how different place handle the request. Some are quite lame, but some really come through for us preggos!
Sometimes my DH will mix up something for me at home with fresh fruit and sparkly water or juice.
