F/U to Vacationing with 2kids in 1room

I posted 2 weeks ago about my nervousness of vacationing with 2 kids and 2 adults sharing one bedroom in a house with my DH's family.  We just got back from the shore on Saturday and overall we had a really great vacation.  The kids did much better than I expected.  The baby was fine b/c he can fall asleep anywhere.  My toddler did really good going to bed at night- she was so exhausted from the beach.  The kids did not wake each other up at night.  Both kids slept in bed with us at some point (not at the same time).  Naps were challenging with my toddler, there were some days where she didn't nap (she would be so close to falling asleep when the other kids in the house would start making a commotion and she'd pop right back up and say "I go play").  But a couple of times I got her to fall asleep in the stroller or the car and was able to carry her into the house without waking her up.

The thing that ended up being more stressful than the sleeping, was the challenge of having 3 two-year-olds in a house together having to share their toys.  I felt like there was never really any down time because there were constantly kids running around and yelling.  But DD and DS had a wonderful time with their cousins and they all Loved the beach!  It was a great vacation, even if it was not very relaxing for the adults.

  • Glad to hear - we will be doing a beach vacation (OBX, NC) when LO is 5 months.  We may also have a house with our family including other kids.  Nice to know it worked out.

Is this your first trip with your youngest?  Just curious, I'm anxious to get travelling with our LO, but not sure how early is too early.

  • Yes this was our first trip with the baby. It's actually easier to travel when they're little b/c they tend to sleep anywhere and aren't mobile yet so you don't have to worry about being somewhere that is not childproofed.  I have not flown with children so I don't have any advice on that.  The only hard part of traveling with an infant by car is stopping to BF.

We took D1 to OBX when she was 5 months, she did great.  We just took both again for a week and D2 had some sleep issues but she's always had more sleep issues so it wasn't out of the norm.

My parents and my sister and her family are in the same house with us also.

  • We are going to the OBX on Saturday with our DS, he is 6.5 months old. My niece will be there too (she is 18 months) and about 16 adults. I am most concerned about my crazy BIL than the kids!

We have also flown with DS and I think the key to that is just being prepared by having enough time at the airport and making sure you have enough food and diapers if you are delayed (we were).
