Birthday in July Party?

Has anyone ever considered doing your child's party in July to take advantage of the summer weather?

I can think of so many fun outdoor party ideas, but not really feasible in December :(  My birthday is in November, and I really did always become envious of all of my friends summer birthday parties.

Re: Birthday in July Party?

  • I have, but my birthday in January. We had a pool and I was always sad I could never have a pool party. We never did it though, and I do not think that we will with DD either.

That's true!  Also, you can't really count on the weather being good that day either.

Maybe I will just host an annual 4th of July picnic instead :)

  • If you lack things to do outside in december I have a few tips:

    - Sledge-party (with hot coco, everyone has sledges to ride on, you BBQ hotdogs on bon fire)

    - Snowman-contest (same as above - minus sledge. But instead go to a 2hand store and pick up fun "outfits" for the snowmen and let the children deside what outfit their snowman will wear - let the parents help to with the building)

    - Treassurehunt in the snow. Give them a map of your garden with a treassure hidden (perhaps the "get-out-of.here"-gift Wink )

I am not saying that everyone is gone, but I know once they start elementary school you will find that most of the kids are away for the summer.I say this because my sisters B-day is in July & there was never anyone around to invite for her party. She was always jealous of the kids who had B-days while school was in session. They always seemed to have more kids at their parties.

When I say kids I am not talking family members etc,I am talking the kids they go to school with.

  • After new baby's 1st b-day, we will probably jsut have a cake and coffe party for close family at birthday time, and have a big BBQ in the summer (not really call it the kid's b-day either though).  It was something we talked about after T's 1st b-day (we had a big party here art the house) because we were just way to swamped with gifts (we were grateful and appreciative, but very overwhelmed).  Now that new baby is due December 1st, we decided this is going to be the best thing for us most likely - I can't imagine getting 2 kids worth of gifts for Christmas and birthdays within 2 or 3 weeks.

  • I've thought about it, but I always liked having my birthday in December!  Mine is the 13th (DS is the 9th) though, so it was further away from Christmas.  If I had a kid whose bday was the week of xmas, I would definitely consider it.  We always had fun parties though and in Oklahoma, you can usually still play outdoors that time of year with no snow to worry about.

  • I've considered it, mainly because C's birthday is the 27th.  School is out, some people travel that week and it's generally just a very busy week for people.  We had a very small party for his 1st birthday on the 28th.  We'll probably keep it that way until he's in school and then maybe throw a 'friend' party the week before school is let out for Christmas break?  Summer parties are great but I have a winter baby.  Oh well.

With Nate's bday being Christmas Eve, we've talked about a half birthday idea. Some people like the idea, and some hate it. We liked it, because at this age it is all family and friends, and it would have been done as more like a BBQ. But, then my cousin had a baby due at the end of June, and they planned a shower & then a get to meet the baby. So it didn't fit into the schedule. Too many things to do end of June.

But in general, I think it can be a fun idea. You could go with a "a very, merry, un-birthday" theme or something like that. You can also buy half birthday decorations and stuff.

  • No.  If I want to have a summer party I will, but I don't think people need to feel pressured to bring a gift and I think it takes away from the thought of the BIRTHday.  JMO but kids these days are entitled and spoiled enough without getting 2 birthday parties.

Call me jaded, but I also believe in small birthday parties of dinner & cake with cousins for my LO.

I really don't understand why you would celebrate your child's birthday at a time that's not around there birthday.  Do you celebrate your 1/2 birthday with a party, cake and gifts? I highly doubt it.

Your kid was born in December, so all birthday related things happen in December.   There will always be people who cannot make it to your kids party, but that's just life. It's your job to keep their birthday separate from Christmas, even if their birthday IS on Christmas.  Make it work to make sure your child feels that their birthday is special, plain and simple.

Just something different.  A few people I know have been to half birthday parties in the summer, and said it was cute.  I guess everyone is different but my birthday and my husbands birthday are both in the winter, and both of us felt the same way that we always wished we were able to have a summer party.

For us, it's not about separating it from the holidays, just wanted to take advantage of the nice summer weather.

Anyway, someone mentioned like a winter wonderland party, and that might be an idea in the future.  DH wants to build an outdoor skating rink each winter, so that could be a fun party with some hot chocolate, fire outside with smores, and maybe do a snowman building contest of some sort if we have enough snow.  I am sure I could think of fun things to do to be able to do an outdoor party in December!

  • We thought about it before A was born but when bday time came around we just enjoyed celebrating on his birthday. The weather here (az) can sometimes be outdoor weather so we will just chance it from year to year if we can celebrate outside or not. Swim parties we looked into and of A ever asks for one when he is older and in school we will just talk with one of the local swim schools. They are open year round and have heated pools with pizza and pool party packages and do one then for him and a few of his friends.

  • Well, my mom used to celebrate our half birthdays by making us our favorite dinner and giving us half a cake, haha. But it wasn't a party, it was just a fun dinner event with my parents and my brother.  I probably will do something like that, just to keep things fun.

But as for winter birthday parties, I'm just going to do it on the weekend closest to his birthday, either in my house or at a place.  We have been going to mygym for a month now and he loves it, so maybe we can have his second birthday in there. I know they do parties.

Also...I hate summer birthday parties...they are always too hot, and too dependent on whether it rains, and everyone expects you to have a huge deal. Let's be thankful we can have our parties in lovely temperature controlled conditions!  Wink

This is true!  We have had quite a few kids parties this summer, and I do think all of the parties made me sad we would never be able to do that for Aiden.  But the one we went to yesterday was kind of awful.  It was a cold, dreary rainy day and there were so many people we were forced to be outside under a tent.  It started raining just as we were eating dinner, and of course Aiden could have cared less and thought it was a grand old time running through the rain.  Needless to say, we left very abruptly before we even finished our meal because I could not keep the toddler contained in the tent and he was soaked.  Not a fun time.

  • It's never crossed my mind to have a b-day party for Sam other than at the time of her actual birthday.

I don't know what it's like to have a Winter b-day (mine's in the Summer), but I will try to make it just as much fun as any Summer party I've ever had. :)

  • I've thought about it, but I won't be doing that.

DS' b-day is 12/27, so his b-day is right smack in the middle of all of the Xmas and New Years hub bub.  I think we might start doing his parties like 2 weeks later, in mid January.  The holidays are just too hectic.  I know a lot of people missed his 1st birthday party because they had other things going on.

I have a July b-day and it was both good and bad growing up.  The bad side:  a lot of people were away on vacation, it was always super hot and humid, it rained (like torrential downpours) on several of my parties.  The good side:  I had lots of b-day picnics at the park when the weather was good.  My sister (Oct b-day) said she was always envious of my parties at the park.

See, I 1000% agree with this.  It never occurred to me to make P's bday anytime other than when it is.  I thought about making it a week earlier/later, but that's it.

I totally LOVE this idea though!  Any occassion for cake!  Smile
