Pregnant after a Loss

Subchorionic Hemorrhage

After a scary night in the ER (major bright red blood gushes), I've learned that baby's doing okay--but I have a 3cm x 2cm SCH. We were told point blank that I definitely still could miscarry.

I've been instructed to stay off my feet until I can get in and see my OB. In the meantime, give me your success stories! I need some hope to hold onto. The thought of losing a third baby breaks my heart. To say the least.
It was a rough road, but Arlo Daniel was born April 1, 2013—and our second rainbow is due October 12, 2014.

Re: Subchorionic Hemorrhage

  • I'm sorry you had such a rough night hun. My OB thinks I had a SCH at about 6 weeks because I completely gushed blood one night after I stood up. That probably doesn't count because it wasn't seen or observed while it was there, but OB said that sometimes they are behind the baby. Sometimes they take care of themselves. I know there are other ladies here who have had them. Good luck!

  • Oh no, not you too!  Ugh.  I am so sorry Panacea.  That must have been so scary. Having gone through this twice (!) this week and finally coming away with the same diagnosis, I can totally relate.  Since my diagnosis is very recent, I can't offer a success story (yet) but from what the doctor said and from my reading on the subject, many SCH resolve themselves on their own by the second trimester.  They are the most common first trimester pregnancy complication.  The most important factor seems to be the location of the SCH.  As for increased risk of miscarriage, this is true, but statistics I have read vary wildly from a 5% increase to a 20% increase. I have found a lot of positive stories and have been compiling them so that when I get nervous, I have something to look at.

Like you, I have been told to rest- I've been spending the majority of my day on the couch.  I am on full pelvic rest and have been told to drink lots of water, as dehydration can aggravate things.

T&P that you are one of the many women who will be a success story yourself.  ((Hugs))

  • We discovered an SCH at my first u/s.  I was sent to an MFM and he told me everything looked good and he didn't think it would have any impact on the outcome of the pregnancy.  I never had any bleeding from it, and it had cleared up by my 13 week appt.

Good luck with yours, I am glad baby is still doing well, and I hope the SCH stops bleeding. It really is stressful, I am sorry you are having this experience.

  • It was discovered on my first ultasound as well that I had a SCH.  I started bleeding heavily, thinking I lost the baby, as did my doctor.  He then diagnosed me with a SCH and eventually it did go away.  I bled off and on for the first 12 weeks, after that nothing.  At my 20 week scan, it was non existant!

I'm sorry you have to go through this, it is very scary, but it can go away on its own eventually.  Good luck and ((hugs))) :)

  • They also found one at my 7 week u/s. I hadn't been bleeding but they said I could start, or my body could reabsorb it. They told me they are very common and while it is not ideal, it definitely doesn't mean the end at all. Luckily my body reabsorbed it and 2 weeks later it was smaller, then at 11 weeks it was gone. FX the same goes for you.

  • Thankfully I haven't had one, but my SIL did. Her first pregnancy was a missed m/c found at 12 weeks, and when she started bleeding heavily with her second pregnancy, she assumed she was m/cing again. Her OB found that it was "only" a SCH, though. She continued to bleed off and on through first tri until about 14 weeks and then it resolved. She's now 39w1d, due with a big, healthy baby girl on Saturday!

  • I don't know if what I had was a SCH, but I had bright red bleeding around 6 weeks and everything is moving along fine now.

I had pretty much chalked this pregnancy up as a loss at that point, but she is still with me:).  I am praying that this is your take home baby and that this SCH will resolve itself quickly.

  • I'm not a success story yet either, but I'm still here after bleeding on and off from weeks 5-12. They found the hematoma early on and it was gone by my NT scan. It was awful and terrifying for the entire time. I was on full pelvic rest for weeks and am still anxious about it, but I just had my a/s and everything looks perfect right now. I definitely know how scary it is, so sorry so many of us go through this!

Good luck to you, mama!  I'm thinking good thoughts.  :)

I just wanted to tell you I had a SCH around 10 weeks (heavy bleeding, clots and gushing) and now I have a healthy 4 month old.  I bled probably for about 3 weeks after my dr. diagnosed me and then didn't bleed anymore.  Hang in there!  I know how scary it can be.  Just take it easy.

  • I am so sorry.  I had an SCH diagnosed at 15.5w after 2 gushing bleeding trips to the ER (14.5 and 15.5w).  The doc (and my OB both) told me that in cases where there is bleeding, but a strong fetal hb, there is only a 3% chance of m/c.  My SCH was 7x2.9x2.2 cm and it was completely gone by my 19w anatomy scan.  I put myself on bedrest for 5 days following the first bleeding incident and returned to mostly normal activities after that (no lifting, no vaccuuming, no pushing the grocery cart, etc).  I didn't have any more bleeding from 15.5w until 20w at which point I had more bright red gushing and a trip to L&D.  I am now 24w and have had no further bleeding since the 20w incident.  At this point, I will not be surprised if I have more bleeding and I'm not as freaked out about it as I was pre-vday, but of course the thought of PTL or placental abruption scares the living crap out of me.

I know how scarey it is and I know what if feels like to be constantly waiting for the next shoe to drop.  Hang in there.  Hopefully your peanut is a fighter like mine and is making itself very comfy in your ute.  (HUGS)) and T&P.
