How do you do it? I used to just wait until he fell asleep nursing and do it with him in my lap, but now that wakes him up! I'm afraid to try when he's awake because he's so grabby. What do you do?
I asked the pedi about this because I am terrified of using a nail clipper on DS. She told me to just bite/chew them off, she said to do it after a bath so they are nice and soft. It works great and I`m not afraid to cut him.
I use cuticle cutters. I feel like I have more control with them and better visibility and precision. I do the same- wait until he falls asleep after nursing. If he started to wake up, I'm not sure what I would do- try to file them instead I guess. Or just get DH to hold him still do I can do it while he's awake. GL!
I use baby nail clippers and have always done it while he's awake. Sometimes it takes awhile(like 10 minutes to get them all done) because I have to make sure there's no finger in there. We've been doing this once a week since he was 2 weeks old and I've never cut him.
I got those too, aren't they awesome! They are not the sharpest but sharp enough to cut baby nails and rounded off so you don't hurt them. I also have a hard time sometimes bc he is squirmy but I try to do it at night when he is more likely to fall asleep while nursing so that he can be nice and relaxed. Some of my friends say that they do it while baby is asleep but I'm always too afraid to wake him
I also heard that the tweezerman baby scissors are good.
People might judge me for this but whatevs.... this is the ONLY time of
the week where I let him watch TV. The TV mesmerizes him and it is about
the only time he is still enough for me to cut them. It takes me three
minutes tops, the TV goes off, and we have nice, trimmed nails.
I use tiny scissors that came with her first aid kit. I grab a good hold of her hand and isolate each finger as I'm going and trim trim trim. I have to do it every other day because she will only let me cut so much but hey it is working. I've not figured out a good way to cut her toe nails yet though.

No judgement here. I'm totally going to try this! I'd rather three minutes of TV than ten minutes for squirming only to end up with a very unhappy baby and still not all his nails trimmed.
I take lo outside on the back porch during the daytime because she loves to look around. She's very good about me cutting her nails. Sometimes she'll just stare at her hand while I trim them. I cut her nails twice a week.
I found an electric nail file at Babies R Us. I use it on my 4-month old when someone else is nearby to entertain her. It takes a little longer than clipping but it's safe & it doesn't seem to bother her at all.
My son is so good for clipping that I got overconfident last week and cut them in a dimly lit room while we were lying the floor together. All went well until the final thumb and I caught some skin and I've never felt worse. It bleeds like CRAZY. He was more upset by us having to hold pressure on it for so long than the cut itself. My friend is a physician's assistant and came over to assess the situation otherwise I would have been a wreck and run him to the ER.
Moral of the story: no more overconfidence and turn on the lights. I still feel terrible and it's completely healed.

but now that he's grabby I wait until hes drowsy or relaxing

I bite em off.
He doesn't sit still. I do the same for his toes too.
I turn on some Classical Baby on Youtube and he sits still long enough for me to clip them! Works like a charm almost every time!
