MRI with Sedation???

My DS is 13 month old and has Erb's palsy. His specialist wants to have a MRI on his shoulder to check and see if his socket is forming right  with the muscles and discuss possible surgery options. I was wondering if anyone has had to have a MRI on thier little one  and had to have them sedating. I am of course worried about having him put to sleep for the procedure and if anyone has had a similar expierence if they could give me some insight as how the process works. Was there any side effects or any issues with it. How long did the procedure last.  Thanks in advance.

    There is a great post in the FAQ's regarding sedated procedures...As far as long it will last, that kind of depends on what they are scanning. I would think just the shoulder would be less than 45 minutes. .Good Luck!

    My toddler son has had many a MRI.  They take anywhere from an hour to hour and a half with sedation.  You have to sedate a young child because they have to lie perfectly still.  There is no radiation involved in an MRI.  Sometimes, they choose to use iV contrast to get a better picture.  Afterwards, they have you meet him in recovery as he is waking up.  There are risks involved with any sedation, but they are very very small.  The most serious being that he may have a reaction to anesthesia.  They used propaphol for my son as it is quicker to leave the system.  He is a little wobbly for the rest of the day, but back to normal the next day.  Good luck.
