Pregnant after a Loss

Someone called the police this AM!! (NBR)

I'm awake...doing the 24 hour pee test again.  DH just called me and said before he left this morning, two police cruisers pulled up on either side of his Jeep (which was parked in our neighbor's parking lot, a business, but adjacent to our property in the back of the lot).  We have permission to use that area when we're taking yard debris from our house to the local disposal facility.  In fact, in the front of the property, the asphalt actually connects our properties so that we have safe access to the road.  We live at a busy intersection, and reversing out of our driveway can be hazardous at certain times of the day.

In any case, someone in the townhouses behind us called the police for a "prowler rustling around in the bushes."  IT WAS MY HUSBAND hefting branches and debris from his project last weekend.  We've lived here for 2 years, and in the spring/summer, he's always doing something with the yard.  The people we bought the house from left the yard a mess, and it's a constant work in project.  It's going to be in the mid-90s today, so he thought he start early and be done early.

While the officers were professional and not abrasive with my husband, I'm thinking a call to the chief of police is due after 8 a.m.  I'm a little miffed that they would question my husband on our OWN property (the bushes are on our property, the asphalt is where the Jeep was parked).

Guess this is a hormonal post....

  • That would have lit a fire under myass. Do your neighboors know/recognize you though? We don't know a few of our new ones (don't want to either) but we all recognize each other...and each others dogs. It hougth I was being followed one night, taking Michelle for her last walk of the night, and it turned out to be our "neighboors" walking theirs too. If I hadn't seen the dog I woulda ran.

  • Whenever they get a call, of any sort, they need to check it out.  My husband got a call the other day of two women saying that there was a baby bird in their garage and they didn't know what to do with it.  My H had to go and spend 20-30 min trying to get this baby bird out of these peoples garage, when they could have just opened the door.  You would be amazed my the amount of dumb phone calls they get, that they have to show up to regardless.

I'm surprised the people who called, even called, especially since your H does this all the time.  I'm sure if someone would ever call again, they would tell the caller "someone who lives near by cleans out the brush.....etc" but would still have to go check it out, b/c if it wasn't actually your H, and a real prowler, the city would be in big trouble!

Did your H at least get finish? Hopefully he did before the heat really picks up!!

I just sent an email to the chief of police.  I actually know him from interactions with him at Lions Club events (both DH and I are active members).  I explained to him that I appreciate the police response and understand that it had to be done, but that I would appreciate someone following up with the townhome person to let them know what was going on this morning.

DH is back home from his first run to the disposal facility.  He's still outside doing something or other.  I told him he is only allowed to stay out until 10, because indeed, there's an excessive heat warning today (as there has been for so many days in recent memory).  Thank goodness for air conditioning!

From what I've heard on the weather, this awful heat is supposed to last well into August (at least here in the Midwest) and we're supposed to get very little rain.  The joys of summer.

  • I have to say that it would be disconcerting and annoying if our neighbors called the police on us, but I have to say, that I don't think I would call the chief of police.  In reality, they were just doing their job and responding promptly.  If they would have showed up and become abrasive or rude, then that might be another story.  You might want to have a talk with your neighbors (or make DH do it) instead, and let them know what to expect.

This is just coming from someone that lives in a high crime area.  We get reports from our police chief, and he urges us to go ahead and call 911 if we see any susupicious person on the streets or in the parks.  It has actually paid off, and we are down somewhere around 20-30% in burglaries and car break-ins in our district.  They have actually caught several criminals this way.

Now, that's just my rant for the morning . . . sorry.  I don't blame you for being annoyed, but I don't know if I would bust the police's chops for this.  Unfortunately.

Ah, I just read this.  This seems reasonable.

We are having a scorcher here too.  Poor DH works without A/C, and I don't know how he stands it.  I'm just dreading running my errands today.

I did note in my email that the officers were professional, prompt, and efficient.  We live in a small borough, with a low crime rate.  If I didn't know the chief of police from another community organization, I probably wouldn't have emailed him.  He did already email me back; as it turns out, it was a township resident that complained (our property sits on the line between the borough and the township; 75% borough, 25% township).  His (the borough chief's) officer just assisted.  My husband later today me it happened to be the canine officer from the borough who helped!  He commented on how well-behaved our Lab was during the visit.  (I was SHOCKED!!)

In any case, we don't know WHICH of the townhome owners/renters it was that complained, so my email basically asked the chief to be in contact with the citizen who complained.  I forwarded it to the chief of the township police (as per the borough chief's instruction) and hope that it gets taken care of soon.  Certainly it's not meant to condemn the police; they did exactly what they are supposed to do.  It is the neighbor who needs to realize that it's perfectly normal for someone to remove braches/tree pieces from their own property and take them to a disposal facility, even at 7:30 in the morning.

  • As pp have said - I would also be annoyed, but in a way also be thankful.  I'd be glad someone was watching out for me and my home just in case the person wasn't supposed to be there.  I'm also the wife of a deputy sheriff so I hear about all the crime that happens.  A lot of it would go away if more neighbors called when they saw something suspicious.  The police are happier to check something out and find it to be nothing than to have to tell a homeowner someone broke in or worse.

  • That is nuts that they called when he was on his own property...
  • A little note from your friendly neighborhood police dispatcher...

A lot of police departments (especially smaller ones that have the manpower to respond to every type of call) have a policy that any call for service will have an officer dispatched. It's not meant to harass anyone or invade anyone's right to privacy, it's meant to keep the communities safe. There have been some calls that have made me go "Really, we're sending an officer for THAT?" but I still have to dispatch an officer.

Your neighbor probably just didn't recognize your husband. And also, you never know what someone has been through to make that person react the way they did. Maybe the last place they lived was in a higher-crime area and their residence was burglarized, putting them forever on high-alert for suspicious activity? You just never know.

I'm glad to hear that the officers were polite and courteous. Also, it's entirely possible that they did follow-up with the reporting party after the call. Where I work, it's policy that unless the RP specifically requests no contact, we'll follow up (either by phone or in person) to let them know the disposition of the call. Now hopefully your neighbors will recognize your husband's vehicle and know "Oh, yeah. That's just the neighbor!"
