GTKY: Where did you go to college?

Apologies if this has already been posted somewhere, but I'm always curious - where did you go to college, what was your major, and do you ever use your degree(s) in some way now?

For me, I went to Boston University undergrad, then University College London for my master's - both are in archaeology, which I did actually use here and there, but I fell into IT long, long ago and didn't really look back.  I later went back and got my library degree, which I do use on occasion in my current techie job (though I do miss being an archivist - it was fun, just poorly paid).

How about the rest of you? Any other bizarre studies? I always toy with the idea of going back to get a PhD in folklore, just for fun...

Re: GTKY: Where did you go to college?

  • I went to Winona State in MN for two years for Nursing, and then realized I didn't want to be a nurse. So then I transferred to Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY and got my undergrad in History and Business (double) and am almost done with my MBA.

I work in Cust Service and Marketing for a small company, so yup, I use it every day!

2 Majors: Accounting & Latin American Studies

I use my accounting degree the other was my just for fun degree that kept me sane while in school.

I'm considering getting my teacher certification.  I can see myself doing this work for a while longer but I don't plan to retire as an accountant.  As soon as I figure what I want to be when I grow up I'll head that way.

  • I went to Point Park University in Pittsburgh. My BA is in Advertising & PR. I finally use it after a lot of random unrelated jobs. I want to go to UVA for an MBA in Marketing but I'm not sure it will work out since I can't really quit and move for school. They don't do saturdays, or online, etc..
  • I went to Paier College of Art in CT and got my associates in photography; I followed that up by going to Southern Connecticut State University and got my bachelors in English. I did some wedding photography here and there, and I now work at a puzzle company (crosswords, etc.) as an editor.

  • I went to James Madison U in Va for a finance undergrad and just about to go back to school for an accelerated MBA program through Averett in VA as well. I currently am a govt contractor so not really using my degree at all:/ Would much rather get my Masters in Finance rather than an MBA, but there are no accelerated programs in the area and this is the only way I can or want to go back to school.
  • I went to Buffalo State College, I got my BS in Elementary Education/Exceptional Education. I took the summer off to be a SAHM to my skids and am going to be applying for subbing positions for the new school year.

  • I went to Texas A&M University (whoop!) and I majored in Spanish. I have a minor in Secondary Education. I am not going back to work this year, but I did use my degree every day since I was a Spanish teacher. However, I still use it now. I love, love, love being bilingual. We have had to have some repairs done to our house recently and most of the workers only speak Spanish. It's so nice to be able to communicate with them. As bad as this sounds, I notice a HUGE difference in the quality of work when you speak their native language. It's like they care about you more.

  • I went to Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

I majored in biology for four years until I decided to change my major to education. I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education, taught for three years, became a SAHM, and now teach children with severe autism while I compete my Master's in Multicategotical Special Education...that is, if this LO cooperates. ;)

  • I went to Word of Life Bible Institute in upstate NY for 2 years.

My college roommate was from Glassboro, and she talked about friends who went to Rowan, so someone has heard of it :)

I did a semester at Mizzou, and a year and a half at Winona. Then I realized I didn't like my major, and I'm waiting to figure out what I want to do before I go back to finish my last two years (probably at the University of Wisconsin-Madison or Milwaukee).

Right now I am a travel agent.

  • I went to marywood university in Scranton, PA. I started with a major in physician assistant then failed Chem and changed it to history and political science. I graduated and was looking at law school in Michigan. I ended up staying at marywood and got my ms in criminal justice. I've worked as a probation officer and now a police officer. I needed by BA to be a probation officer but I only need 2 year degree to be a cop. Part of me regrets not going to law school. Maybe someday.

  • I went to Quinnipiac University in CT for one year until I realized I had no idea what I wanted to do and it was a waste of $38,000! I transferred to Salem State and majored in Marketing. Using that degree now in my marketing specialist position (and not loving it). Wanting to go back eventually for something else but I don't know what

I am currently getting my master's degree in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University. I would love to get a job in a prison library (seriously), but I have a feeling I'll end up working in a public library.

    JMU grad here, too! :)

I studied art history with the plans of going to grad school but ran out of money and the desire to stay in school, so I got into graphic design after taking just one class my senior year. I try to think of it as not a total waste ;)

  • I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC & have my BFA in Interior design... I worked in retail design & architecture for a few years before I decided to leave and go on my own. DH and I now own a Design & build firm and we have a Kitchen and Bath showroom. I definitely couldn't have done it without my degree!

  • I went to Southwestern University, a small, private liberal arts school of about 1300 students located in Georgetown, Texas (about 20 minutes north of Austin). I majored in Communication Studies, with minors in Theater and Dance. I worked as a legal assistant at a large law firm in downtown Houston until I became a SAHM. Now I teach drama to little kiddos a couple of nights a week, so I am actually using my degree more now than I did when I worked full time! My original major was Theater, but I ended up dropping it to a minor for personal reasons.

Oh, and while I will always be an SU Pirate (ARGH!)...my sports hopes and woes live and die by the Fightin' Texas Aggies of Texas A&M University (DH's alma mater).

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?...But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:26-27&33-34

I went to a public Uni in Upstate NY for my undergrad - double majored in History and Psychology - and then UNT for my masters in Information Sciences.  Right now I'm working as a Librarian (probably the loudest, craziest, and most tattooed Librarian you'll ever meet, but a Librarian nonetheless *laughs*).  I teach research classes at a local community college. I'm planning to go back within the next five years and get my Masters in History though and then PhD as my achievable dream job is to be a History Professor.
