Acid Reflux

I've asked about this before on here....I really think DS has it.  He is spitting up at least 3-4 times every feeding and it's a LOT not just a little plus he spits up about 1-2 hours after a feeding....right before we're about to do the next feeding.  It launches out too it's not just an ooze out of his mouth.

I made an appt. to see his Pedi...is there a test they do?  How do they determine if he has it or not?  Also the appt. isn't for a couple weeks.....I'm going to call every day to see if anyone canceled so I can maybe get in earlier....but anyway what can I do until then to soothe DS because he cries for at least 30 min. sometimes when he spits up.  I just feel so bad for him Sad

Re: Acid Reflux

  • There wasn't a test they did on DS.  They only put on meds if 1) LO isn't gaining wgt or 2) LO is in pain.  Mine was the latter and went on Zantac at 7 weeks.  I'd been telling the Dr that I was concerned about it since day 1, they all said it was normal to be spitting up that much but once I could tell he was in discomfort I got him in that night to be seen.  The meds do NOT decrease the spit up (so stay prepared to keep doing all that laundry), but it does decrease the pain they feel.  His night time spit ups gradually went away and finally at 6 months he actually started going an entire day here and there with no spitting up.  GOod luck - it is such a tough thing, but it will get better.

  • My experience was the same as above.  They don't do a test, but they put you on Zantac if the baby appears to be uncomfortable when spitting up.  In our case, Irene was gaining weight, but she was small--on the 10th percentile growth curve.  I think that was also a factor.  Not all babies who spit up have reflux, it's really the discomfort issue.  Irene was pretty colicky, yelling every night from 7 until midnight or later.  That was also a factor in her diagnosis.

In the meantime, what you can do is hold LO upright for 30 minutes after every feeding.  I know, this is a huge pain until they're sitting up on their own, because you have to carry them around...we used a carrier for this a lot of the time, until she could use an exersaucer at 5 months.  Strapped into a stroller in the all-the-way upright position would also work, I think.  Like the Zantac, it won't help the volume of spit up, but it will alleviate discomfort.

Good luck, and hang in there.
