Prunce Juice for constipation?

My DD just started NeoCate last Thursday. She was pooping well on Friday and then all of a sudden she stopped and didn't have a BM until Sunday and then went another 24 hours until her next one. This is very unlike her, she usually blows up a diaper at least 3 times a day. She's not passing hard stools, just having a very hard time passing the small ones she has.

I'm attributing this to the new formula and was told by her pedi nurse to try 1/2 tsp of prune juice with 1/2 tsp of water once a day, did I hear her right? That doesn't seem like much, but I'm a FTM and have no clue really lol How long until I should see some relief for my poor babe?

I always check with DD's pedi first, but know MOMs have the real life experience.

  • Hmm.. I would think you'd want to mix the prune juice with 1-2 oz of water.  We started DS on baby oatmeal and he was constipated as well.  We tried just plain water, which I read about somewhere, and were going to try Karo syrup (I believe the recommendation was 1 tsp mixed with 2 oz water) but he finally went after we stopped the oatmeal for a few days.  Anyway, I'd mix the juice with more water.  1 or 2 oz is not going to hurt your DD, especially if it's not every day and she's still drinking the same amount of milk or formula.

  • We just gave 1 oz of prune juice. We were told we could have mixed it with another oz of water but we didn't. He was about 2 months old.

  • The Karo Syrup is what they did in the old days but is not good for babies because of the sugar. Instead, our pedi had us use brown sugar disolved in water and later had had to use straight prune juice.

They actually still suggest it. And prune juice has almost the same amount of sugar as a tsp of karo syrup has in it, so it really doesn't matter. The reason why they stopped was because they thought it may contain small amounts of Clostridium botulinum (which is also found in honey)....it has been determined that it doesn't. We used this for our 2 year old per pedi recommendations when we had to switch to formula.

I personally don't use prune juice because I think it's gross. I prefer pear juice as does DD if she has an issue. I also never mix it with water as they don't need any extra from what they already receive, as it can cause electrolyte imbalances from getting too much water. They are able to have an ounce of juice per how many months they are. So DD is 3m and can have 3oz a day of juice. I usually give her 2oz pear juice mixed with 2 oz BM. But be prepared for a blow out :)

  • My DD is occasionally getting constipated and our doctor told us 1 oz of prune juice mixed with 1 oz of water.  It seems to help and usually takes about 12-24 hours to work.  I've been doing it whenever she passes a pebble like stool.
