I don't know if this is in the FAQ section so if it is I apologize (I'm rushing off to work but wanted to ask this question). I know it's sort of loaded, but I feel like Google is totally overwhelming me. So I want to hear from the experts. I feel like everything with twins (or high order multiples) has to be done earlier than singletons. I already ensured that the baby shower is around 25/26 weeks. But in terms of other things, what are your thoughts on timeframe for the following (and feel free to add anything I totally overlooked, because it's probably pretty obvious that I have no clue what I'm doing!):
Setting up the nursery
Taking a child birth/lamas class
Taking the class about childcare at the hospital (that's different from above right? where they teach you CPR, swaddling, etc)
Choosing a pediatrician
I feel like there are so many things I'm overlooking right now...I can't even think of them. But anyway, ideas or thoughts are greatly appreciated. I'd like to ensure I'm doing these things with plenty of time to spare...
Re: Timing - help from MoM's
plan everything for sooner rather than later.
I took my baby classes at hospital from Dec - Feb. I took the basic hospital class, the BF class, the infant CPR class, the parenting class, and a natural birth class. I am a FTM so wanted to be prepareed.
Babies born unexpectedly premature in early April at 33 weeks. I was glad I went to my classes early because I was on stricter bedrest later in pg and never could have physically sat through classes either the bigger I got. My girlfirend delivered her twins at 28 weeks and missed all her classes, so that was my heads up to go sooner than normal.
I never did get the nursery setup. The babies were 3 months old before we put the nursery together. Same with my friend with the 28 weekers. Not the end of the world, but wish we had done it before they arrived . We had family / friends help us - watch the babies for us - so we could work on the nursery.
Looked for a pedi starting around January, My due date was end of May. Luckily had found someone we liked before the babies were born in early April.
Looking at your ticker, I would get moving on everything now.
I am 31 1/2 weeks and we just finished our 4 week childbirth classes last week (at 30 weeks). I would have liked to have had them done a little sooner, but that's the only time they had them. Other than a full day Saturday class the day of my shower or later than these ones ended. If you do a full day class I would say to do that early too b/c I could not sit comfortably for an 8 hour class at this point. That was partly why I elected to take the 4 week class, which was 2 hours at a time. I also took a breast feeding class before the child birth classes started, so I was around 25/26 weeks. And we did our hospital tours then as well.
The nursery is mostly set up, not really decorated yet (although they will be in our roon first anyway). I would say DH painted and built the cribs when I was 26/27 weeks - beginning of July. He built the dresser two weeks ago when we got it from Ikea. Like I said, there are little things that still need done in there.
I had a prenatal appt with a peditrician 2 weeks ago (so I was 29 1/2 weeks). That was fine, but certainly could have been done sooner. It was one of those things I wasn't thinking about and then suddenly realized I needed to do.
The more you can get done before you are 30 weeks the better I would say. Actually, the more you can get done in 2nd tri would be ideal.
I agree with the PPs...the sooner the better, especially with anything involving physical work, such as setting up the nursery (mainly, I guess, things like painting, if you plan to do that yourself).
I also always put in a plug for packing the hospital bag early, based on my own experience of running around throwing things in a bag after my water broke (and I was leaking all over the house!).
We did all of these things during the 2nd trimester. I knew which pediatrician I wanted to use, but did not do my prenatal appointment with the pediatrician until my 3rd trimester.
I wish I was that prepared this time around
