I'm a FTM, too, so take this with a grain of salt... but in my experience around newborns and what other moms have told me, it's all about what you're comfortable with. Some first time parents are just terrified of the cord area and don't like possibly making their babies uncomfortable. If you don't think that will be you, a regular onesie should be fine.
It seems like it may be more of an "old school" recommendation. Two of my aunts asked me why I didn't register for them, and I told them I didn't really think they were necessary. One even said they sell (sold?) newborn diapers with little cutouts for the cord? Odd.
We used them because you don't have to put their floppy heard through a hole or unsnap during diaper changes, but also I guess because they didn't rub the cord. DS lived in a shirt, diaper and swaddled the first 3-4 weeks. Also, the Newborn Pampers Swaddlers do have cut-outs or are made for the umbilical cord, they also have the pee-indicator on the front.
We used them but not because of the cord. DH liked them because you don't have to put their tiny bobble head through a shirt hole.
This is why I was thinking of getting them, but my Mom keeps saying he'll wiggle out of his diaper. I figured it'd be easier for DH who's never changed/clothed/cared for an infant, and do week old babies really wiggle out of diapers??

Lol, that was never an issue in our house.
I really didn't think so :-) good to hear that's not the case. I'm grabbing a set next time!
The main reason I like the Kimono style is because I was convinced with DS that I was going to break his head off squeezing it into a onesie the first few days. He had a HUGE head for a newborn, but it seemed so fragile!! It took some mental fortitude to stuff his head in a onesie the first time.
the first chunk of weeks the kiddo needs like 5-10 diaper changes a day...the kimono shirts w. a diaper and swaddle are just easier for all those extra changing sessions.

Re: Newborn Kimono style shirts - are they necessary?
My thoughts exactly!

Not if they're the right size!

Ditto PP--I liked them b/c I didn't have to put them over DD's head.
I also recommend pants with feet--way easier than socks.
