So confused about solids and formula

Okay, we just started LO on solids once a day. Should I decrease his formula a little? He eats 35 ounces a day right now. It's hard to go by his lead because he would drink 12 ounces a bottle if I gave it to him and he easily finished a whole thing of sweet potatoes today and looked for more! Did you change your formula or BM intake with solids? I know he still needs lots of formula, but thought of dropping an ounce a bottle or something

Re: So confused about solids and formula

  • I would say if he's still happy eating that much, I'd let him.  One serving of solids a day probably won't change his intake, but over the next months as he eats more he'll probably drink a bit less on his own.

  • I don't know, but I am so completely confused about solids. I've never been this confused about anything in my life. I'll be watching this thread!
  • Formula is more important right now. He'll probably drop some formula feedings on his own when he's ready.

  • At this age the solids are about learning (pincer grasp, adapting to new flavors/textures) but the amount they take in isn't much, nutritionally.  So until they're eating actual full meals (after a year old or so) don't force a decrease in formula.  He might decrease a little on his own as you increase his solids and that's ok but don't actively try to replace any formula with solids.

    This.

Seconding this. They'll cut their intake on their own.

This is what I've found as well.  When we first started solids he was still eating the same amount of formula, but over the last 2 months, he slowly reduced his formula intake by a few ounces.  Where he was eating about 5 7 ounce bottles a day, he now averages more like 6 ounces a bottle and he's upped his solids intake.

When I first started solids I was really confused and stressed about how to do it right, but after a while you will figure it out.  I kept his bottle schedule the same and just started adding in some solids meals between.  Now we have three "meals" a day most days, and have decreased his bottles as I start to notice that he isn't finishing them all.

  • Agree with the others, don't necessarily reduce the amount of formula, he may just naturally do it.

We went from 6-6 oz bottles a day to 5- 6 oz bottles, but he doesn't always finish those bottles. My daily goal is for him to have the 5 bottles and have him eat at least 5 ozs, but I don't force it. DS also eats oatmeal in the morning and evening and is offered one 2.5 oz veg with the oatmeal, but he eats half to all of the veg. Always eats all of his oatmeal!

He seems very content with that amount of food and STTN and does not wake up hungry. We can go 15 mins after waking up to his first bottle.

  • I think it must vary from kid to kid.  I'm having the opposite problem - I feel like I'm practically forcefeeding LO to take 25 oz a day.  It's always something - babies are tricky!
  • I cut back if DD2 was spitting up a lot. She has GERD so I would formula first then an hour later offer solids. At almost 8 months she eats three meals a day of solids with three bottles in-between. Just go with what ever works for baby. If he wants that much formula go for it! DD2 didnt start decreasing formula till she was eating two large portions of food a day (lunch and dinner). She also started sleeping12 hrs straight after having three full meals.

  • At six months I was giving LO 5 7 oz bottles and two meals. As I slowly increased the amount of solids (which I did by noticing him wanting more solids) I notice he wasnt drinking as much. By 8 months I gave 4 8 oz bottles and three meals. For me the transition was listening to my DS cues and cutting a bottle out when noticing he wasn't drinking as much and was able to eat more solids. Formula is def. still important at this stage. I don't what ur doctor said but when we started solids we were told to give two meals a day, maybe that would help. Every baby is different and I understand ,I get so stressed out over this. My pedi doesn't make it easy either, they also say just go by what he wants.
